Roughnecks Compete in Michigan State Open

East Lansing, Mich. - The University of Findlay wrestling team was back in action on Saturday, Nov. 9 for the Michigan State Open.  The Roughnecks had 13 athletes compete, along with three of those finishing in the top six within their bracket.
 
Fresh/Soph 133 Division
After receiving a bye in the first round, Nate Knowlton won by way of a tech fall (21-6) over Collin Twigg (Grand Valley State).  In his next match he would fall to Massey Odiotti (Northwestern) via decision (7-5).  Knowlton would go on to win his next two consolation round matches against Adan Benavidez (Kent State) and Kolten Baker (Ohio) by way of decision in both.  Calvin Werden (Northern Illinois) won 9-1 by major decision over Knowlton in the consolation semifinals, but he would finish strong in the fifth-place match, defeating Cameron Chinavare (Central Michigan) 9-7 by way of decision.
 
Fresh/Soph 157 Division
Findlay's Diego Chavez would finish sixth, as he started with a first-round victory over Kosta Koufalis (Spartan Combat RTC).  In his next match, he would fall to Mason Stewart (Michigan State) by decision (6-1).  Chavez would win his next two consolation matchups over Jack Jeppesen (Davenport) and Dominic Paterra (Kent State), by way of a fall and a decision.  Chavez would fall in the consolation semifinals against Ryan Garvick (Indiana) via major decision (13-0) and would medically forfeit his fifth-place match against Northwestern's Ty Wilson. 
 
Fresh/Soph 174 Division
Connor Smith would open with a bye, followed by a loss to Brody Evans (Edinboro) by sudden victory.  After another bye in the second round of the consolation bracket, Smith would defeat David Malin (Wisconsin) 8-4 by decision.  He would lose his matchup in the consolation semifinals against Bradley Mayse (Grand Valley State) but would win the fifth-place match against Hunter Hutchenson (Edinboro) 13-3 by way of a major decision.
