Roughnecks Take on the Findlay Open

Findlay, Ohio - The University of Findlay wrestling team turned in an impressive performance at the Findlay Open on Saturday, Nov. 15, earning two individual titles and several podium finishes against a deep field of regional and nationally ranked competitors.

Nate Knowlton led the way at 133 pounds, capturing the championship with two technical falls and three decision victories. His run included a 10-4 win in the final over Lake Erie's Anthony Sagaris, who entered the tournament ranked No. 7 nationally.

At 165 pounds, Gary Nilson joined Knowlton atop the podium. Nilson posted four wins, highlighted by a sudden-victory decision in the semifinals before claiming the title via medical forfeit in the championship match.

Heavyweight Giulian Bodiu, ranked No. 11 nationally at 285 pounds, advanced to the finals with two pins and a major decision. He fell 6-2 in the championship match to Grand Valley State's Carter Blough, who is ranked No. 4 nationally.

Micah Cotrell placed third at 149 pounds after winning four straight matches to reach the semifinals. His lone setback came in a one-point loss to Ashland's Hayden Kuhn, ranked No. 7 nationally. Cotrell rebounded to secure third place by medical forfeit.

Billy Smith, ranked No. 11 nationally at 125 pounds, fought through the consolation bracket to finish fifth. Smith opened the day with a technical fall and added several hard-fought wins to climb back after an early loss. Andrew Parish rounded out the Roughnecks' placers with an eighth-place finish at 157 pounds, earning multiple victories in the wrestlebacks.

Other Roughnecks who posted multiple wins included Diego Chavez at 157, Donavyn Watts at 184, Luke Sparkman at 197 and Wyatt Nemitz at 133.

Findlay is back on the mat on Saturday, Nov. 22 with a trip to take on the Grand Valley State Lakers.
