Roughnecks Conclude Season at NCAA Super Regional

Findlay, Ohio- The University of Findlay wrestling team hosted the 2025 NCAA Division II Super Region III Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 28 inside the Koehler Fitness and Recreation Center. The single-day event featured nearly 10 hours of action across three mats, as 12 teams and close to 100 wrestlers competed for the opportunity to advance to the NCAA Division II National Championship.

Billy Smith (Sr.) - 125 lbs.
Seeded fourth in the initial bracket, Smith ultimately placed fourth in his respective weight class. Ranked 10th nationally at 125 pounds, he opened the day with a 9–3 decision over Lake Erie's Braden Hahlen. In the next round, he dropped a tight 4–2 decision to West Liberty's Logan Smith before rebounding with two straight wins — including a sudden-death victory and a major decision — to advance to the third-place bout. There, he faced Grand Valley State's Jack Parker — ranked third nationally at 125 pounds — with a National Championship berth on the line, but fell 8–1 to place fourth.

Nate Knowlton (Jr.) - 133 lbs.
Entering the day as the third seed at 133 pounds, Knowlton finished in sixth place. The Mokena, Ill. native opened with a dominant 19–4 technical fall over Bluefield State's Luke Roberts, then followed with a narrow 4–3 decision against Lake Erie's Anthony Sagaris. He later dropped three straight bouts, with his final match ending due to injury.

Ashton Anderson (Sr.) - 141 lbs.

Opening the day as the fourth seed, he recorded consecutive victories over opponents from Bluefield State and Grand Valley State. He then dropped a technical fall to Glenville State's Ethan Hardy but responded with a technical fall win over Tiffin's Bret Minnick. With a National Championship berth on the line, Anderson fell 10–3 to Lake Erie's Carsen Richards in the third-place match, finishing fourth and just outside the top three who advance to Sioux Falls.

Micah Cotrell (So.) - 149 lbs.

Seeded fifth to open the event, Cotrell received a first-round bye before pulling off a 4–1 upset of fourth-seeded Anthony Wood of West Liberty. He then fell 8–2 to top-seeded Chris Donathan of Grand Valley State — the nation's top-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds — before rebounding with a 4–3 decision over Lake Erie. A medical forfeit in his final bout left him in fourth place overall.

AJ Parish (Jr.) - 157 lbs.

Seeded fifth to begin the event, he received a first-round bye before falling 18–1 by technical fall to Glenville State's Jimmie Bailes. He responded with back-to-back wins — first earning a technical fall of his own and then a 7–1 decision over Ashland's Fernando Lopez. Needing a victory in the consolation semifinal to advance to the third-place bout, Parish dropped a tightly contested 7–4 decision to finish sixth on the day.

Gary Nilson (Sr.) - 165 lbs.

Also seeded fifth, Nilson opened with a first-round bye before dropping an 11–2 major decision. He then bounced back with consecutive victories but fell in the consolation semifinal to West Liberty's Jordan Watters, who ranks fourth nationally in the weight class, ultimately finishing fifth at 165 pounds.

Donavyn Watts (So.) - 174 lbs.

Opening the day as the fifth seed, Watts earned a first-round bye but fell 4–1 in his first bout. He responded with consecutive wins by fall — first against Lake Erie's Marky Stankorb and then over Bluefield State's Tomas Dolo. In the consolation semifinal, he dropped a 7–2 decision to place fifth in his weight class.

Chase Stein (Sr.) - 184 lbs.

Entering the day as the fifth seed, Stein dropped a major decision to West Liberty's Oliver Byerly. He rebounded with a victory by fall over Salem, 19–3. Needing a win in the consolation semifinal to advance to the third-place match, Stein fell 9–0 to Tiffin's David Davis, who ranks 15th nationally in the country, finishing sixth overall.

Ronnie Thomas III (Fr.) - 197 lbs.

Starting as the fifth seed, Thomas received an opening-round bye before falling to the 12th seed by a 6–3 decision. He rebounded with back-to-back victories to advance to the consolation semifinal. There, he dropped a 12–2 decision to Tiffin's Max Millin, coming up short of the third-place match. Thomas later fell to Iran Love in the fifth-place bout — his second loss to Love on the day — to finish sixth overall.

Giulian Bodiu (Sr.) - 285 lbs.

Also seeded fifth, Bodiu — ranked 10th nationally at heavyweight — opened the day with a victory by fall over Salem before dropping a 4–1 decision to Ashland's Wyatt Bailey, who is ranked ninth in the nation. He rebounded with a win over Bluefield State to remain in contention but fell in the consolation semifinal. In the fifth-place bout, he was defeated by Glenville State's eighth-ranked Colby Whitehill, finishing sixth overall.

This marks the conclusion of the 2025–26 wrestling season.
