Tyler Johns was named the 31st head football coach in University of Findlay history on Friday, December 19, 2026.
Johns returns to Findlay after spending the previous two seasons at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, North Carolina. He most recently served as the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ interim head coach and worked as the program’s offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.
A former Oiler student-athlete, Johns played at Findlay from 2009–12 and earned All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) honors as a lineman in 2012. He began his coaching career immediately following graduation as an assistant offensive line coach at Iowa Western Community College before moving on to the University of Illinois, where he spent two seasons as a graduate assistant working with the offensive line and multiple future NFL players.
Johns earned his first full-time coaching role in 2017 at Ohio Dominican University, serving as the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. During his tenure, the Panthers won a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) championship and fielded one of the nation’s top offenses. Seven offensive linemen earned all-conference honors, and the offense produced two All-Americans, including a Harlon Hill Trophy nominee and G-MAC Player of the Year at quarterback.
In 2019, Johns joined Tiffin University as the run game coordinator and offensive line coach before being promoted to offensive coordinator. Over five seasons, the Dragons captured three G-MAC championships and made two appearances in the NCAA Division II Playoffs. During that span, 19 offensive linemen earned all-conference recognition, and Johns coordinated an offense that featured a three-time G-MAC Player of the Year at quarterback.
Johns currently resides in Findlay, Ohio, with his wife, Selina, and daughter, Nora.
