#5 Oilers Defeat Eagles 70-58

The University of Findlay men's basketball team, ranked fifth in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) poll, defeated Ashland University 70-58 on Saturday, January 29 in Ashland, Ohio. The win gives the Oilers a 17-1 record on the season with a 10-1 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

The Oilers struggled out of the gate, but got hot from the three point line late in the first half as sophomore guard Aaron Robinson and junior guard Kyle Caiola both hit a pair of triples in the final three minutes of the period. Caiola's last triple, as the first half buzzer sounded, gave the Oilers a 30-21 lead at the break.

Findlay built a 20-point lead in the second half and survived several Ashland attempts at a rally to secure the rivalry win.

Caiola led the team with 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting while senior forward Tyler Sparks (12) and Robinson (12) also reached double figures in the game.

Sophomore forward Brad Piehl played outstanding off the bench, scoring nine points to go along with nine rebounds while senior guard Nathan Hyde chipped in eight points and a career-high ten rebounds.

The Oilers shot 50 percent (26-of-52) from the floor and had a 37-24 advantage on the boards.

Ronnie Steward led the Eagles with 13 points while Kale Richardson and Jordan Berlin scored ten apiece.

The Oilers will be back in action again on February 3 when they host Michigan Technological University at 6 pm in Croy Gymnasium.
