Oilers Take Big Lead, Hold Off Bulldogs 43-35

The University of Findlay football team evened their record at 3-3 on the season with a 43-35 win over Ferris State University on Saturday, October 8 at Donnell Stadium.  The win also improved the Oilers record to 3-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

The Oilers began with a bang as junior running back Monterae Williams hauled in a 43-yard touchdown reception from freshman quarterback D.J. Marrah, who entered the game as an injury replacement for starter Clay Belton.  After a successful two-point conversion, the Oilers held an 8-0 lead with 3:05 remaining in the opening quarter.

Williams increased the Oilers lead in the second quarter by scoring on a 56-yard scamper at the 12:13 mark while Marrah completed an 8-yard touchdown pass to red-shirt freshman Nathan Morris with only three ticks left in the first half as the team went into the break with a 22-0 lead.

The Bulldogs made the game interesting in the second half as they scored five touchdowns, but the Oilers added two more to hold off the rally.

Marrah got the Oilers on the board in the second half with an 11-yard run at the 13:32 point of the fourth quarter while Williams added a 1-yard scoring run with 3:26 to play in the game.

As a team, the Oilers churned out 336 rushing yards and a total of 470 yards in the contest.  They also forced turnovers as senior defensive back Donte Johnson and junior linebacker Brandon Butler each picked off a pass.

Williams finished the game with 170 yards on 29 carries.  He scored three touchdowns on the ground and had the one reception for 43 yards and a score.

Marrah finished 6-of-10 passing for 116 yards and a pair of touchdowns.  He also ran 14 times for 85 yards and a score.

Sophomore Zach Kinninger added 66 yards on seven carries while sophomore wide receiver Seth White hauled in three passes for 46 yards.

Defensively, senior defensive back Isaiah Ballard recorded a career-high 17 tackles while Butler finished with 11 stops.

The Oilers will be back in action again next Saturday when they host Ohio Dominican University at 3 pm for Homecoming.
