Northwood Holds Off Findlay 14-10

The University of Findlay football team fell 14-10 to Northwood University on Saturday, September 3 in Midland, Michigan.  The loss gives the Oilers 0-1 record on the year with a 0-1 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

The Oilers defense got things going early as senior defensive lineman Andrew Leddy forced a fumble that was recovered by junior linebacker Brandon Butler.  The fumble recovery then led to a 42-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Clay Belton to red-shirt sophomore tight end Jaryd Brown as Findlay took a 7-0 lead with 5:57 to play in the opening period.

The Timberwolves tied the game late in the first quarter, but freshman kicker Zack Housholder connected on 32-yard field goal attempt to give the Oilers a 10-7 lead with 11:46 remaining in the first half.

Northwood scored on a 55-yard run by Tim Zabawa in the third quarter to make the score 14-10 and held the Oilers scoreless the rest of the way to claim the victory.

The Oilers out-gained Northwood 382-285 and gained 219 yards on the ground during the loss.

Junior running back Monterae Williams led the offense with 144 yards on 26 carries while Brown caught eight passes for 103 yards and a score.

Belton finished the game by completing 13-of-27 passes for 163 yards.  He also ended up with one touchdown and one interception in the game.

Defensively, Butler led the team with ten tackles while sophomore linebacker Kenny Klatt and junior defensive lineman Richard Sumlin registered seven tackles apiece.

Senior defensive back Donte Johnson had five tackles and an interception while Leddy and junior linebacker Nate Etler had five tackles each.

The Oilers will be back in action again next Saturday when they host Northern Michigan University.  The contest is scheduled to begin at noon in Donnell Stadium.
