Timberwolves Defeat Oilers

Midland, MI - The University of Findlay baseball team traveled to Northwood University for the first two games of the four game series on Saturday, May 6. The Oilers dropped both games to fall to 18-25 on the season and 8-22 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

Game 1 L 1-0 Box Score

The first game featured a pitcher's duel between the two GLIAC foes as the only run of the game was scored in the bottom of the fifth inning by the Timberwolves for a 1-0 victory.

The Oilers threatened in the seventh inning as junior Pete Burkett led off the inning with a single. With two outs senior Miguel Valdez connected on double to put runners on third and second, but a strikeout would preserve the victory for Northwood.

Senior Austin Rodesky (2-7) took the tough loss on the mound for Findlay. He pitched a complete game giving up one run on only three hits with five strikeouts. He now has 215 career strikeouts, second most all time.

At the plate the Oilers recorded eight hits, compared to just three for the Timberwolves. Senior Logan Harrah and junior Josh Schwerer each had two hits in the game for Findlay.

Game 2 L 13-5 Box Score

Three big innings lifted the Timberwolves to a game two victory. Northwood exploded for five runs in the third inning and four more in the sixth inning for a 9-0 lead.

The Oilers finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh as they scored five runs on five hits. Sophomore Jordan Williams and junior Cameron Johnson led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Schwerer would follow with a single to score Williams and freshman Casey Gould singled to score Johnson and Schwerer. An error allowed Derrick Herd to reach safely and with two outs, sophomore Trevor Anderson connected on a two RBI triple for a 9-5 deficit.

The Timberwolves would get four runs back in the bottom of the seventh for a 13-5 lead, which would be the final score after the Oilers were held scoreless the final two innings.

The Oilers finished the game with 11 hits and Northwood recorded 15 hits. Both teams committed three errors in the game. Gould, Williams and Johnson each finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate.

Junior Alexander Theiss (2-2) picked up the loss on the hill. He pitched 5.2 innings giving up eight runs, three earned, on nine hits with one strikeout.

The Oilers will wrap up the series with Northwood with a doubleheader on Sunday, May 7 in Midland, Mich. Game three is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
