Findlay Sweeps Double Header on First Day of Spring Trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Auburndale, Fla. – The University of Findlay baseball team swept their first double-header of their annual spring trip on Sunday, March 4 with a pair of wins against West Virginia Wesleyan College. The Oilers took the first game by a score of 11-5 and won the nightcap by a score of 9-6 to improve to 3-1 on the year.

Game 1 (W | 11-5)

Tied at 2-2 in the third inning, the Bobcats put up a pair of runs to take a 4-2 lead going into the fourth. That fourth inning would be the deciding inning in the contest as the Oilers went on to send 11 hitters to the plate.

Findlay would get three hits in the inning, highlighted when freshman Ethan St. Clair would, in his first collegiate at-bat, hit a grand slam. In the third, the Oilers scored six runs and took an 8-4 lead. The Bobcats answered with a single run in the inning, but the Orange and Black tacked on three in the sixth to seal the victory.

St. Clair would finish the game 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI while Derrick Herd, Trevor Anderson, and Troy Merriman each collected a pair of hits.

Colin Gosard picked up his second win of the season as he tossed five innings and scattered six hits while striking out seven batters.

Game 2 (W | 9-6)

After a scoreless top half of the first inning, Findlay came to bat in the bottom half and, after a two-out single from Derrick Herd and an error, Nic Varda roped a two-RBI double to put the Oilers ahead 2-0. Varda would come around to score on a wild pitch to give Findlay a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

The Orange and Black added four runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to ice the game.

Hoping to stage a comeback, the Bobcats rallied for six runs in the final two innings, but it was not enough as the Oilers would finish the day with two wins.

Mark Delas picked up his first win of the year pitching 6.2 innings and striking out nine batters while Josh Robinson came in for the final out, a strikeout.

Findlay will be back on the diamond tomorrow as they take on Ashland University in a single game.
