Kirksville, Mo. - The University of Findlay men's basketball team took on the Quincy University Hawks on Saturday, Nov.11 in the second of their two-game affair against foe from the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). The Oilers led with three minutes to play, but a late run by the Hawks sent the Oilers back home with a 71-65 defeat. Both teams are 1-1 to begin the year.
Similarly to yesterday's contest against Truman State, the Oilers fell behind early as, just six minutes into the game, Quincy had built a 15-2 lead. Findlay slowly chipped away and closed the half with an 11-3 run to pull within five at 32-27.
Findlay would tie the game at 37-37 on a three-pointer by senior
Nathan Bruns just three minutes into the second half, an a 12-5 run was capped after a steal by Bruns and jumper by freshman
Anthony Johnson put the Oilers up 39-37.
Just when the Hawks thought they had regained control, lead 51-42, Findlay battled back again with a 10-0 run to take a 52-51 advantage with 9:36 to play.
Back-and-forth the teams went and the Oilers eventually held a 62-60 lead with 3:34 to play, but Quincy would end the game on an 11-3 run to give Findlay the loss.
Quincy shot 26-of-56 (46%) in the game while the Oilers made 21-of-60 (35%). Findlay scored more points off turnovers, 23-to-18, but it was the Hawks that held a big advantage in the paint, outscoring the Orange and Black 36-to-18 from in close.
Coming off of the bench, senior
Cameron Shaw scored a career-high for his time at Findlay, dropping 15 points on 4-of-6 from the floor, all of which came from three-point range. Senior
Nathan Bruns scored 14 points and had five rebounds while sophomore
Mason Brandt scored ten points and had three boards.
Freshman
Will Aljancic, who made history with his performance yesterday, scored five points and tied for the team lead with five rebounds.
Findlay will have their home opener against Ferris State on Saturday, Nov. 18 in Croy Gymnasium. That game will tip off at 3:00 pm.
