Findlay Oilers (1-1, 0-0 G-MAC)
2023 Findlay Football Coaching Staff
Last week's victory against Pace was one that came in the face of a tremendous amount of adversity. A nearly 1,200 mile round-trip, a three hour rain delay in the fourth quarter, and various injuries made earning a 40-25 win seem even more special. The Oilers stay on the road this week, getting their G-MAC slate of games underway against the Storm of Lake Erie.
Against Pace, Findlay did not play its' cleanest game, but still have many positives to be taken away. A microcosm of the Oilers performance is evident in the numbers put up by starting quarterback
Alec Bornhorst. The senior was not perfect, tossing three interceptions in the game, but he made up for those miscues in a big way, accounting for all five touchdowns scored by Findlay. Bornhorst became the first player in program history to have rushing, receiving, and passing touchdowns all in the same game. He finished 17-for-27 for 215 yards and touchdown through the air, ran eight times for 70 yards and three scores on the ground, and had one 31-yard reception for a touchdown. A performance that will give him and the team even more confidence in their captain.
As advertised, tight end
Mike Rigerman has been a go-to target for Bornhorst, catching nine passes for 140 yards and a score through two games this year. Newcomer
Cam Childers is also reliable as a pass catcher, totaling 131 yards on 14 receptions this year.
Defensively, sophomore
Sam Weihrauch has been all over the field again this season. Through two games, the Findlay native has 23 tackles which is tied for fifth in the country in that statistic. He also has 3.5 tackles-for-loss, one fumble recover, and two pass breakups. Sophomore
Romaro Warren Jr. and senior
Grey Brancifort have also made their share of stops, collecting 17 and 14 tackles, respectively, including 3.5 and 4.0 TFL.
About the Opponent – Lake Erie Storm (1-1, 0-0 G-MAC)
The Storm have struggled on the gridiron historically, posting a record of 43-115 since the program began in 2008. Three times a season has ended with zero wins. However, as is always the case early in a season, the new year is a time of optimism and, through two games, the Storm are 1-1 and are coming off of a road win against Northern Michigan, a game where Lake Erie scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to snag a 24-21 win.
Perhaps one of the biggest offensive losses in the conference was Storm quarterback Gerald Gardner who graduated after a career year, throwing for more than 3,000 yards and 22 scores last year. Replacing him as the starting quarterback is grad student Xeavier Bullock. His performance in the opener was rough, completing just nine passes for 192 yards and two INT, but against Northern Michigan, he was better, completing 21 passes for 265 yards. Bullock has also 93 rushing yards on 20 attempts.
Bullock's favorite target is Jovohn Tucker who has 12 receptions for 212 yards and a touchdown. He is currently second in the G-MAC in receiving yards and is one of just two receivers to be averaging more than 100 yards per game.
Running back Keep Kpoto was injured last week and turns over the starting position to Raphael Jones who has 24 carries for 77 yards this year.
On defense, the name Jorge Sanchez will be a popular one as he is the team's leading tackler with 17 through two games. The graduate linebacker is a transfer from Henderson State where he last played in 2021.
