The Game
Wrapping up a three-game road swing, the University of Findlay football team heads to Hillsdale College to take on the Chargers. Coming off of back-to-back wins, the Oilers are 2-1 while Hillsdale is licking their wounds from a tough opening stretch of games that has them at 0-3 in the young season. Findlay and Hillsdale will kick off their game at 4:00 pm in Frank 'Muddy' Waters Stadium in a contest that serves as the Chargers' Homecoming Game and is also the team's home opener.
Findlay is 14-18 against their opponent from the north but have won seven of the previous nine games. The Chargers have not beaten the Oilers in Frank 'Muddy' Waters Stadium since November 6, 2010.

Findlay Oilers (2-1, 1-0 G-MAC)
2023 Findlay Football Coaching Staff
Findlay comes into Week 4 after a dominating victory over Lake Erie College last week in Painesville, opening up G-MAC play with a victory. That game got chippy late with the Storm' frustration began to boil over as the scoring margin increased, but this coming Saturday, the Oilers can expect a disciplined, focused opponent that has one thing on their mind, to beat Findlay.Â
The Oilers ground game has been stout, as expected, ranking second in the G-MAC with 171 yards per game and eight touchdowns. Leading the way for Findlay has been senior
Brian Benson who has 34 carries for 165 yards and two scores, averaging five yards per carry. However, maybe the biggest threat on the ground comes in the form of quarterback
Alec Bornhorst who has 21 attempts for 147 yards and a conference-leading five rushing touchdowns. His 6.4 yards per carry rank fifth in the G-MAC among players with at least 20 carries.
Through the air, Bornhorst is coming into his own, following up a performance in which he completed 71% of his passes, a career-high. To-date, the Georgia native has completed 47 passes for 516 yards and three scores.
On the receiving end, tight end
Mike Rigerman has been nothing short of stellar. He leads the team with 204 receiving yards on 12 receptions and has a pair of touchdowns. Last week, Rigerman wowed fans with a one-handed catch that turned a potential fourth down into a drive that ended in points for the Orange and Black.
Defensively, sophomore linebackers
Sam Weihrauch and
Romaro Warren Jr. are the story, both eclipsing the 20-tackle mark through three games. Weihrauch has 29 stops to lead the conference while Warren has 25 which is tied for sixth in the league. The duo has been a wrecking ball for opposing offenses, combining for three sacks and nine tackles-for-loss. Findlay's leading tackler from a year ago,
Grey Brancifort, has 17 tackles and is tied for fourth in the G-MAC with six tackles-for-loss.
About the Opponent – Hillsdale Chargers (0-3, 0-1 G-MAC)
Three weeks into the season and the Chargers of Hillsdale have yet to play a home game. That changes this coming Saturday when the Blue and White will be in the friendly confines of Frank "Muddy" Waters Stadium for the first time in the 2023 campaign. Thus far, Hillsdale has played at #20 Indianapolis, at Michigan Tech, and at G-MAC favorite Ashland.
Senior running back Michael Herzog is the headline for the Chargers' offense that is putting up just 18 points per game. Herzog is second in the G-MAC with 326 yards on the ground and four touchdowns and is coming off of back-to-back 100+ yard performances.Â
Under center is senior Garrit Aissen who has completed 50-of-86 passes for 488 yards this season, throwing just two touchdown passes and four interceptions. Part of his struggles revolve around the loss of standout wide receiver Isaac Teslaa. This year, Aissen's lone go-to target seems to be redshirt freshman Sam Lee who is getting his first taste of playing time in 2023. Lee has 16 receptions, ten more than the next closest Chargers player, with 223 yards and two scores. No one else on the team has a TD reception or more than 70 yards receiving.
On defense, Will Whims is the leading tackler with 17 stops, although the Chargers hope to see that change as Whims serves as a defensive back for Hillsdale meaning Whims is often on the back end of big plays by the opposition. The Chargers are last in the G-MAC, allowing 40.7 points per game, and have record just three sacks and zero interceptions so far this season.
