Ellis' Career-High Drives Second Half Comeback | Oilers Win 76-65

Findlay, Ohio – The University of Findlay women's basketball team snapped a three-game skid on Thursday, Jan. 18 with a 76-65 comeback victory against the Cedarville University Yellow Jackets. With that win, the Oilers have matched their win total from a season ago, improving to 7-9 overall with a 3-5 mark in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play while the Yellow Jackets fall to 5-9 overall and 3-4 in the league.

Cedarville played well in the opening half, building up to a 39-26 advantage late in the second quarter, ultimately taking a 41-29 advantage into the break. In that opening half, the Oilers turned the ball over ten times and allowed the Yellow Jackets to hit 18-of-29 from the floor.

Findlay outscored Cedarville 24-16 in the third quarter, including a momentum changing four-point play by Chloe Callahan that cut the deficit from ten to six in the blink of an eye, but it was the fourth quarter when everything turned in favor of the Oilers.

Defensively, the home team held Cedarville at bay, using a 17-4 run from the end of the third and into the fourth to take the lead. Part of that run included a stretch of 7:13 during which the Yellow Jackets did not score a single point.

The teams traded free-throws down the stretch as the Oilers remained in front, securing the 11-point victory, despite trailing for more than 30 minutes of the game.

On a night that featured a combined 48 fouls, 31 of which went against Cedarville, the Oilers made waves at the charity stripe, connecting on 27-of-43 attempts, outscoring CU by 20 in that category. Findlay also won the rebounding battle 34-to-31.

The Oilers made 20-of-45 (44%) from the floor while Cedarville made 27-of-59 (46%). Despite being outscored 28-16 in the paint, Findlay made nine three-pointers to just four by CU.

Senior Kate Ellis stole the show, pouring in a career-high 25 points on the strength of 12-of-19 from the free-throw line and 6-of-8 from the floor. She also led the team with eight rebounds.

Scoring a season-best 15 points was senior Lauren Hapgood who made three triples on the night and hit on all six attempts from the charity strip. Junior Chloe Callahan scored 11 and grabbed five rebounds while sophomore Alyssa Ziehler had ten points on 5-of-6 from the floor.

Findlay hits the road until February now as they return to action on Saturday, Jan. 20 with a G-MAC affair at Malone. That game will tip at 1:00 pm.
