Findlay Oilers (7-1, 5-1 G-MAC)

2024 Findlay Football Coaching Staff

One loss on the season is the lone blemish for the Oilers, who have climbed back into the American Football Coaches' Association (AFCA) Top-25 Poll. At #25 in the country, Findlay comes into the weekend boasting the top scoring offense in the league at nearly 35 points per game.

With an elite ability to score, it is the Oilers' defense that has been the biggest factor in the recent series against Walsh. In the last four games against the Cavaliers, Findlay has allowed just one touchdown, outscoring their opponent from North Canton by a combined score of 127-7.

Leading the Oilers defense is a pair of players who had incredible performances last week against Thomas More. Junior Romaro Warren Jr. is third on the team with 48 tackles and, last week, made 4.5 tackles-for-loss, the most in a game for UF in almost a decade. He is currently tied for the lead league with 11 TFL on the season.

Leading the G-MAC in pass defense is true freshman Jayon Harvey who has tallied 43 tackles, but more impressively has 13 passes defended, the most in the G-MAC and the most by any true freshman in the country regardless of division. He, along with junior Christion Stokes, lead the Oilers with a trio of interceptions to their credit.

Senior Matthew Rueve leads the conference with 2,026 passing yards and 22 touchdowns, but has been prone to the turnover, tossing nine interceptions, tied for the most in the conference. He will rely on his top two wideouts Redd Douglas and Bryan Hunt, who have combined for 57 receptions, 854 yards, and seven touchdowns this season.

On the ground, junior Jayden Farmer is finding his stride after battling injury early in the season. To-date, he has carried the ball 99 times for 479 yards and five touchdowns and is coming off of a career-high 143-yard performance against Thomas More last week. Senior Makya Matthews has carried the rock 93 times for 480 yards and six touchdowns, as well.

About the Opponent – Walsh (4-4, 3-3 G-MAC)

Chosen ninth in the G-MAC Preseason Poll, the Walsh Cavaliers are a team that has been arguably the biggest surprise in the conference this season. At 4-4 on the season and 3-3 in the league, the Cavs already have as many conference victories this year as the last three seasons combined and have proven to be one of the top offenses in the league.

Walsh turned heads in the opener when they scored 41 points in a road victory against West Liberty, but it was not until a 54-point game against KWC and 63-point performance against Lake Erie that folks around the league started to notice that this scoring offense could be the real deal. A big win in Week Six against Hillsdale got the team from North Canton to 4-2, but back-to-back losses against Tiffin and Ohio Dominican have sent the Cavs back to .500. As opposed to Ashland which had a front loaded schedule, Walsh has most of its' toughest games down the stretch, playing Tiffin, Ohio Dominican, Findlay, Ashland, and Northwood consecutively to end the year.

The Cavaliers are scoring 31.8 points per game which ranks third in the G-MAC behind Findlay (34.9) and Tiffin (34.3). Much of that success has come on the ground where Walsh leads the conference with 165.4 rushing yards per game.

Cameron Macon is the team's leading rusher and has totaled 79 carries for 406 yards and seven touchdowns, second most in the G-MAC. Macon's best game this season came back on Oct. 5 against Lake Erie when he rumbled for 156 yards on 14 carries and two scores. Dante Walker and Dalys Jett each have 100-yard games this season and have combined for 456 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. Jett, who also spends time as a kick returner and quarerback, has also thrown for four touchdowns.

T.C. Molk is the starting QB and will take a majority of the snaps. This year he has completed 74-of-119 throws for 1,035 yards and seven touchdowns. That duo has combined to throw just three interceptions which is the fewest by any team in the league.

Garrett Waite is the leading receiver for Walsh and has 22 receptions for 405 yards and one touchdown. Anthony Harris is no slouch, making 20 catches for 391 yards and a team-high four touchdown receptions.

As much as the offense has produced this season, the headliner for the Cavs comes at the linebacker position in the form of last year's G-MAC Defensive Player of the Year, Cam Hollobaugh. This year he has 88 tackles, 4.0 tackles-for-loss, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles. Against Hillsdale, Hollobaugh made 22 tackles, tied for the most by any DII player in a game this season. His 88 tackles are sixth in the country this season.

The Oilers have won seven in a row against the Cavs, dominating the overall series, but they certainly understand that this Walsh squad is different than those from years past.
