Oilers No-Hit as Part of DH Sweep by SVSU

Chillicothe, Ohio (V.A. Memorial Stadium)  - The University of Findlay baseball team took on the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals for the second-consecutive day on Monday, Feb. 19, playing their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opponent in Chillicothe, Ohio. After a split yesterday, the Oilers suffered two tough defeats, getting no-hit in the opener to lose by a score of 5-0, and later falling short by a 21-6 final in the nightcap.

With the games today, Findlay is now 1-3 to start the season while SVSU begins their 2024 campaign with a 3-1 record.

Game 1 Box Score (L 5-0)

After a strong showing with the bats on Sunday, today brought a different story as the Oilers struggled mightily at the plate.

Findlay's pitching was up to the task early, stranding an SVSU runner in the second and stranding two more in the third to keep the game knotted at 0-0.

The Cardinals finally broke through in the fourth with one run and added two more in the fifth. Another pair of runs in the seventh made it 5-0.

Saginaw pitcher Hayden Jatczak was dealing and had a perfect game going into the bottom of the seventh. Senior Aiden Lao was hit by a pitch to start the frame and, after a fly out, stole second. A walk to sophomore Casey Maruniak put two runners on but a strike out and ground out ended the game, giving Jatczak his no-hitter.

It was the first time since March 5, 2015, playing against Gannon, that the Oilers had been no-hit. In that contest, which was played in Florida, Findlay actually came away with a 1-0 victory taking advantage of an error, a pair of walks, and a wild pitch.

Freshman David Jimenez suffered the loss in his collegiate debut. He tossed four innings and allowed three runs on four hits. He walked four, hit a batter, and struck out two.

Game 2 Box Score (L 21-6)

The nightcap did not go much better for Findlay as the Oilers fell behind 9-0 through the first inning-and-a-half. Senior Cam Farrar got the Oilers first hit of the doubleheader with a single leading off the bottom of the second. He and sophomore Keelan Daniel, who walked, would score on a double by sophomore Andrew Williams for Findlay's first runs of the day.

However, SVSU would not slow down as they scored five runs over the next four innings and then added seven in the final two frames to secure a win.

Williams and freshman Aiden Booth each finished with a pair of hits. Williams had three RBI on the day.

Freshman Dylan Rouse took the loss in his collegiate debut, tossing just 0.2 innings and allowing five runs, three earned, on three hits and three walks.

Findlay will be back in action when they take on Wingate in North Carolina on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24.
