Findlay Outlasts Scrappy Tiffin Team | Win 71-61

Findlay, Ohio- The University of Findlay women's basketball team maintained their impressive form with a win over the Tiffin University Dragons on Thursday, Feb. 22. With the 71-61 win, the Oilers have now won four of their last five contests. Findlay improves to 13-12 on the season with a 9-8 mark in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). Meanwhile, the Oilers hand the Dragons their fourteenth consecutive loss with their record falling to 4-22 on the year with a 2-16 mark in the conference. 

The Dragons took a five point lead early in the first quarter which was answered by a 12-2 run by the home team to take a five point lead of their own. That lead eventually grew to eight thanks to a three-pointer by freshman MacKenzie Schulz as time ran out in the first frame. Findlay took their largest lead midway through the second quarter at 32-17. The Dragons would eventually bring it down to 13 as the two teams entered the break.

Just one minute into play in the second half, Tiffin went on a 13-6 run which included a perfect 4-of-8 from the floor and a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. The Dragons were able to get within three with a minute left in the third but back-to-back free throws by sophomore Ella Mescher followed by a jumper from freshman Taylor Stanley gave Findlay a seven point cushion heading into the final ten minutes.

Leading by just six with five minutes to play, the Oilers proved too much for the Dragons, finishing the quarter a perfect 3-of-3 from the floor while holding the visitors to 2-of-8 from the floor and 0-of-3 from deep. They would cruise to a ten point victory, to remain perfect in the series against Tiffin this season.

On the day, the Oilers hit 24-of-55 from the floor (53.3%), including 9-of-20 (45.0%) from three-point range. Meanwhile, holding Tiffin to just 20-of-51 (39.2%) from the floor and 8-of-29 (27.6%) from three. 

Senior Kate Ellis led the team with 17 points on the night. The guard was 6-of-9 from the floor including a perfect 1-of-1 from deep. She took advantage at the charity stripe recording 4-of-6. She also grabbed five boards. 

Sophomore Ella Mescher, who made an appearance in the starting lineup, recorded a career-high 14 points. She was 5-of-7 from the floor and grabbed two rebounds. 

Also recording double-digit scoring was freshman Taylor Stanley who added eleven. She led the team in assists with four. She also tabbed three steals.

Findlay's leading rebounder was junior Chloe Callahan who grabbed six while chipping in five points. 

Currently ninth in the G-MAC standings, the Oilers need a late season push to make the Great Midwest Championship which includes the top-eight teams. Findlay will face Hillsdale for back-to-back contests before ending their regular season at #1 Ashland.
