Late Inning Rally Not Enough | Baseball Falls 8-6 at Wingate

Wingate, N.C. – The University of Findlay baseball team dropped a second game on its' spring trip, falling by a final of 8-6 on Saturday, Feb. 24 at Wingate University. With that loss, the Oilers have lost five straight and now sit at 1-5 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 9-4 on the year.

A home run by Wingate in the first inning made it 2-0 early, but in the third, a double by sophomore Gavyn Smith and single by sophomore Mike Sciortino put two runners on with no outs. After a sac bunt, sophomore Keelan Daniel doubled down the right field line, tying the game at 2-2.

The Bulldogs regained the lead with a run in the third, but again, the Oilers tied it up in the fifth, this time on an RBI ground out by senior Aidan Lao.

Wingate then scored five unanswered runs to take a 8-3 lead through seven innings. Findlay did pick up three on a bases loaded double by sophomore Ryan Thompson, but it was not enough as the home squad secured the victory.

Sciortino had a pair of hits and two runs scored in the game while Thompson, who pinch hit in the eighth, had three RBI.

Sophomore Carson Mellott took the loss on the hill to fall to 0-2. He threw 4.2 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits.

Findlay is back in action on Sunday, Feb. 25 with a game against Lander University. That contest will start at noon.
