Clermont, Fla.- The University of Findlay softball team opened up their southern spring trip on Wednesday, Feb. 28 with games against Mary University and Charleston University. The Oilers dominated the first game, winning 10-1, and then fell the nightcap by a score of 13-0 to the 19th ranked team in the nation. With the split, Findlay moves to 6-6 on the young season. Meanwhile, Mary, out of North Dakota, falls to 3-8 on the season while Charleston improves to a perfect 8-0.
Game One
The Oilers got off to a quick start against the Marauders, as senior Avery Shepherd hit a single down the middle. Sophomore Alexys Antal then tripled to right field to send Shepherd home and put the first run on the board for the Orange and Black. With no outs in the inning, Bredel hit a single up the middle to send Antal home to give Findlay an early 2-0 lead.
The second inning included three runs on four hits. Those hits included junior Alissa Davis' single, Shepherd's double, Antal's double, and Bredel's double.Â
The score remained at 5-0 until the fourth inning. Antal recorded a single to center field before Bredel hit a double down the third base line to send Antal's pinch runner, senior Meghan Burke home.Â
Findlay extended their lead in the fifth inning as sophomore Brooke Swavel was sent home on a sacrifice fly by Shepherd to make the score 7-0.
Bredel set the tone in the sixth inning, opening with a homerun. Sophomore Jenna Poulson was sent home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Kora Navarro. The Oiler's final run of the game came from junior Brooke Radermacher's single which sent freshman Korah Nash home.
Bredel ended the game with a perfect 4-of-4 from the plate where she racked up five RBIs. Antal was also dominant at the plate recording three hits in her four at-bats which included two doubles.
Despite Mary scoring one run late in the sixth inning, Findlay would pick up the win in run-rule fashion. In the circle for Findlay was sophomore Alexys Antal who threw 4.2 innings for the Orange and Black, she recorded zero runs on two hits. She struck out four while walking five. She moved to 2-1 on the year. Relieving her was sophomore Kayla Dykin who threw just over an inning. She recorded two strikeouts in the six at-bats.
Game Two
The day's finale did not go well for the Oilers.Â
The Golden Eagles opened the game with a three-run homer to put the Oilers down 3-0 early. Charleston then scored one run in the second, five in the fourth, and four more in the fifth to secure a run-rule victory at 13-0.
Offensively, Findlay had just one hit while Charleston had ten. The Oilers' lone hit came from sophomore Alexys Antal.Â
Junior starter Emma Jones took the loss, throwing 1.1 innings, allowing four runs on three hits.Â
Findlay will be back in action tomorrow as they face Mary again at 11am followed by Minnesota State- Mankato at 1:15pm.
