Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Oilers Obliterate Overworked ODU | Win 89-72

Columbus, Ohio - The University of Findlay men's basketball team was in Columbus, Ohio for an unusual Monday affair, taking on the Ohio Dominican Panthers on February 5, making up a contest that was postponed from January 25 when injury caused a shortage of available personnel for ODU. Findlay, playing its' third of a five-games-in-ten-days stretch, had no issues, securing an 89-72 victory. That win gives the Oilers a record of 9-11 on the year with a 6-6 mark in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play while ODU, which won its' first conference game last Saturday against Trevecca, falls to 4-13 overall and just 1-9 in G-MAC play.

The Panthers, also playing a packed schedule now due to postponements, were coming off of an emotional overtime victory against the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans on Saturday night and jumped ahead early on Monday, taking a quick 5-0 lead after Findlay missed its' first five shots of the game. However, over the next seven minutes, the Oilers outscored ODU 28-11 to take a 28-16 lead midway through the first half. In that 28-point stretch, Findlay connected on 7-of-8 from downtown, led by senior Cameron Shaw who made five of those triple tries.

The hot shooting would continue for the Oilers who would eventually go into the break with a 48-31 lead. In the first half, Findlay hit 10-of-22 attempts from deep while holding the weary Panthers, many of whom logged nearly 80 minutes of play last week, to just 9-of-26 from the floor.

The largest lead of the game would come with seven minutes to play in the game when the Oilers took an 81-56 lead, ultimately cruising to a 17-point victory.

As a team the Oilers, who cooled off from three-point range in the second half, made 35-of-67 (52%) from the floor including 12-of-25 from deep. On the glass, it was domination for the Orange and Black, outworking the Panthers to the tune of a 37-25 rebound advantage. Leaning on its' depth, Findlay's bench scored 23 points to just 11 points off the bench for the Panthers, which played just eight players compared to the Oilers which had 12 athletes see the floor.

Offensively, the night belonged to Cameron Shaw who scored a season-high 24 points for the Oilers on the strength of an 8-of-11 performance from three-point range, tied for the fifth-most threes in a single game in program history. It is the second time in three games that Shaw, who has now made 14 threes in the last three games combined, has eclipsed the 20-point mark.

Senior Nathan Bruns also scored in double-figures, picking up 15 points and grabbing ten rebounds. That double-double is the 15th of his career, tying him with Alex White (2015-2019) for the most double-doubles in the NCAA era of the program and the second-most at UF since 1975 behind only Randy Kortokrax (1983-87) who had 70 double-doubles in his career.

Freshman Anthony Johnson scored ten points and grabbed six rebounds while senior Joey Edmonds had nine points and a team-high five assists.

The OIlers are back in action for an important road game against the Tiffin Dragons, which tonight defeated the top team in the G-MAC Cedarville, by a score of 71-68. Findlay's game at Tiffin will be played Thursday, Feb. 8 and will tip at 7:30 pm.
