Box Score Salem, WV - The University of Findlay baseball team took on the Mercyhurst University Lakers in a neutral site competition on Sunday, March 10. The game was played in Salem, WV at Salem University. Despite trailing for much of the game, the Oilers came back and picked up a 12-10 victory, improving to 5-7 on the year. MU falls to 2-8 with the loss.
The two teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but consistent snow flurries forced the cancelation of the second contest.
It was not exactly an ideal start for the Orange and Black as Mercyhurst exploded for five runs in the first inning, a frame that featured six hits including two doubles and a home run.
However, in the bottom of the first, senior
Cam Farrar blasted a two-run home run to left field to stay within striking distance at 5-2 through one inning. Another run in the second made it 5-3.
In the bottom of the fourth, an RBI double by Farrar was followed by a two-RBI double by senior
Nate Brooks, putting the Oilers in front for the first time at 6-5, but another five-run inning for the Lakers in the fifth again put Findlay behind, trailing 10-6 with just two at-bats remaining.
A home run by senior
Cole Kwiatkowski in the fifth was followed by two more hits, making the score 10-8.
Mercyhurst was set down in the top of the seventh, setting up a dramatic bottom half.
Freshman
Nick Palm walked to start the inning and Kwiatkowski singled. Both runners advanced on an error on the play. A wild pitch sent the first run home and a sacrifice fly by
Aiden Lao tied the game at 10-10. After sophomore
Keelan Daniel was hit by a pitch, Farrar stepped up and drilled his second home run of the game, a walk off, two-run blast into the snowy sky that emptied the Oilers dugout and ended the game.
Farrar finished 3-for-4 in the game with 2 home runs, a double, and five RBI to lead the offensive charge. Kwiatkowski had two hits including a home run while Brooks had a double, walked three times, and had two RBI.
Keelan Daniel scored three runs.
Logan Bragg started an got the no-decision. He tossed 4.1 innings and allowed eight runs, seven earned, on ten hits. He walked two and struck out three.
Freshman
David Jimenez was the beneficiary of the late-game come back, earning his first college win in the process. He held the Lakers scoreless in 2.0 innings, giving up just one hit.
Findlay is back in action on Monday, March 11 with a double header against Salem.
