Box Score 2 Nutter Fort, WV - The University of Findlay baseball team took on Salem University in a twinbill on Monday, March 11 in Nutter Fort, WV and came away with a split, winning the opener 14-6 before dropping the nightcap 13-4. Today's results give the Oilers a record of 6-8 on the year while the Tigers are now 12-5.
Game 1 (W 14-6)
Findlay got things started in the first inning with a pair of long balls to take an early lead. Sophmore
Keelan Daniel, the second batter of the game, went deep first. Later, after a ground-rule double by senior
Nate Brooks and a hit-by-pitch, freshman
Aiden Booth hit a three-run blast to give the Orange and Black a 4-0 lead.
Salem scored three in the third to pull within one, but three runs over the next two innings by the Oilers kept the Tigers at arms length.
Most of the damage came in the top of the seventh for Findlay. Already leading 8-4 going into the inning, Findlay put up six runs on three hits to all but end the contest. In that inning, Salem made two errors, walked two batters, and hit a batter to help the Oilers' offense put up a half-dozen runs.
Findlay finished with 14 runs on 15 hits and did not make an error.
In the game, Brooks finished with three hits, including a double, scored two runs and had one RBI. Senior
Cole Kwiatkowski also had three hits in the game. He scored a run and had one RBI.
Booth led the team with three RBI in the game, all of which came on that home run in the first inning. Sophomore
Casey Maruniak had a pair of hits in the game, including a solo home run in the sixth. Senior
Andrew Micale added two hits, two runs scored, and two RBI.
Freshman
Carson Mellott picked up his first win of the season, throwing 6.0 innings and allowing four runs on five hits. He walked four and struck out five.
Game 2 (L 13-4)
The nightcap was not as kind to the Oilers who, this time, would find themselves on the opposite side of a lopsided score.
Findlay did take a 1-0 lead in the third on a single from Brooks and later scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to increase the lead to 3-1. Salem would not go quietly, however, as the home team scored 12 unanswered runs including an eight-run eighth inning.Â
Four runs on 12 hits and no errors was the line for the OIlers while the Tigers scored 13 runs on 13 hits and also had no errors.
Senior
Cam Farrar, who today was announced as the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Player of the Week, had two hits, including a double, and a run scored. Brooks, Kwiatkowski, and freshman
Nick Palm all had two hits, as well.
Sophomore
Ethan Mohr got the start for UF and threw 3.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out four. Freshman
Aidan Kiessling was the pitcher of record for Findlay, throwing 2.2 innings of relief. He allowed seven runs, six earned, on five hits. Command was a struggle for the Oilers all day as the pitching staff walked 11, hit two batters, and had two intentional walks, as well.
The Oilers open conference play on Saturday, March 16 at Hillsdale. The first of a four-game set will begin at 1:00 pm.
