Findlay, Ohio - The University of Findlay baseball team wrapped up a series with the Northwood University Timberwolves on Friday, March 29 at the Marathon Diamonds. Last year's Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Champions, Northwood won both games on the day, taking the opener by a score of 7-2 and later winning the series finale by a score of 3-2. After today's action, the Oilers are now 15-13 on the year and fall to 9-4 in the G-MAC while Northwood gets to .500 at 13-13 overall with a record of 8-4 in the conference.
Game 3 (L 7-2)
Northwood jumped on top early, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning.
A home run by sophomore
Casey Maruniak in the second, his fourth of the year, made the score 2-1 and in the third, an RBI single by senior
Cam Farrar tied the game up at two.
The next two innings went quickly as both teams struggled to move runners around the bases, but two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh by Northwood made the score 7-2. The Timberwolves, who brought in their closer in the beginning of the sixth inning, closed the door to seal the win for the visiting team.
Findlay finished with two runs on six hits and made one error while Northwood scored seven runs on eight hits and did not make a miscue.
Sophomore
Carson Mellott suffered the loss on the hill, throwing six innings and allowing seven runs on seven hits. He walked five and struck out five.
Senior
Cole Kwiatkowski was the lone player with multiple hits in the game. He also added a run scored. Maruniak had one hit, the home run, while sophomore
Andrew Williams recorded a double.
Game 4 (L 3-2)
Like in the first game of the day, Northwood got ahead with a run early in the ballgame, taking a 1-0 lead in the second.
An RBI double in the third by sophomore
Keelan Daniel scored senior
Aiden Lao to tie the game.
The pitcher's dual continued as senior
Logan Bragg put together a solid outing on the hill, although he would ultimately take the loss.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the seventh, momentum finally went Findlay's way. Sophomore
Andrew Williams doubled down the left field line to start the inning and, after stealing third, came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Kwiatkowski.
In the eighth, Bragg retired the first two batters of the inning but allowed back-to-back singles with the Timberwolves three-hole stepping to the plate. The ball was turned over to closer
Sebastian Jones and, after a stolen base, Matt Magno, NU's catcher, ripped a two-RBI single to give the Timberwolves a 3-2 lead.
Findlay got two runners on in the eighth but could not cash in and, in the ninth, went down 1-2-3 to end the game.
The Oilers scored two runs on three hits while Northwood scored their three runs on eight hits. Neither team made an error in what was a well-played series finale.
The three hits for the Orange and Black came from Daniel, Williams, and senior
Andrew Micale.
Bragg was the tough-luck loser on the mound. He threw 7.2 innings and gave up just three runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out one.
Findlay is back at home on Tuesday, April 2 when they play host to the Wayne State University Warriors in a non-conference affair. That game will begin at 1:00 pm.
