North Canton, Ohio- The University of Findlay's softball team secured two wins on the second day of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Softball Championship. After dropping the first game yesterday, the Oilers must win in order to survive, and that they did. They faced the eighth-seeded Malone in the morning in which they picked up a 4-0 win to send Malone home. They then faced seventh-seeded, Tiffin in an afternoon match up that they won 3-1. With the two wins, Findlay advances to 32-19 on the year with a 17-9 mark in the conference. Malone concludes their season with a 28-19 record and a 13-13 mark in the league. Meanwhile, Tiffin concludes their season with a 29-24 record on the year and a14-12 mark in the G-MAC.
Game One vs. Malone (W 4-0)
In a win-or-go home situation, the Oilers were able to put the first run on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Senior
Avery Shepherd led the Oilers off with a double down the left field line. She then advanced to third on a bunt from junior
Cassie Warner. Sophomore
Annika Bredel then hit a sacrifice fly to score Shepherd.Â
The next four and half innings were scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Findlay put three more runs on the board. Warner found base again and later advanced to second on an error. Bredel then hit a triple to center field and in turn sent Warner home. Sophomore
Alexys Antal then singled to left field allowing Bredel to score. The final run of the game came from
Joslynne Frazier's single to right field that scored pinch runner, sophomore
Brooke Swavel.
The Oilers recorded four runs on seven hits and committed no errors. Meanwhile, Findlay held Malone to just one hit. The Pioneers recorded one error.Â
Sophomore
Alexys Antal, who threw a perfect-game against Malone just weeks ago, picked up right where she left off. Despite two walks and a hit-by-pitch, Antal did not allow a run until the top of the seventh inning. She struck out nine.
First team all-conference selection, Bredel led the offense with her triple while also recording two RBI. Warner was two-of-three from the plate while also recording an RBI. Frazier also had an RBI.
Game Two vs. Tiffin (W 3-1)
In another win-or-go home match up, the contest started scoreless through the first four innings. Tiffin was the first to get on the board in the top of the fifth inning off of a solo-home run.
Findlay would go on to put up three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Reaching base after getting hit-by-pitch, Bredel was sent home on a single from senior
Kaitlynn Briggs. A double by senior
Alissa Davis then sent both Antal and sophomore, pinch runner
Avery Flynn home.
Needing three outs to win, the defense retired three of the next four to secure the win.Â
In the circle for Findlay was junior
Emma Jones who tossed all seven innings. She allowed one run on four hits. She struck out five while walking just one.Â
Davis was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate to lead Findlay's offense which also included two RBI. Briggs also had an RBI. Senior
Hannah Baker recorded a double in the contest. Bredel recorded her 21st stolen base of the season. She chases Tracey Massey who recorded a program-high 26 in 1987.
The Oilers will be back in action tomorrow, Friday, May 3 as they advance through the G-MAC Consolation Bracket.
