Mason, Ohio- The University of Findlay baseball team participated on the first day of the 2024 Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Baseball Championship on Wednesday, May 8 at Prasco Park. Findlay, seeded third, took on the sixth seed, the Ohio Dominican Panthers in the opening contest on Legacy Field and came up with a dominant 8-4 victory. With that win, the Oilers, now 28-20, will continue in the winners bracket, while Ohio Dominican, now 27-222, moves on in the consolation bracket.
Findlay, making their second straight appearance at the conference tournament, got things started quickly in the bottom of the first, scoring a trio of runs. With senior Aiden Lao on second after a leadoff single and senior Cole Kwiatkowski on first after being hit by pitch, senior Cam Farrar hit a three-run home, putting Findlay ahead 3-0.
The Oilers added three more runs in the bottom of the third thanks to another three-run homer by senior Andrew Micale bringing the score to 6-0.
Ohio Dominican scored a single run in the top of the fifth before putting three up in the top of the seventh to bring the game to within two at 6-4.
In the bottom of the eighth with two outs, Micale singled before stealing second. Sophomore Keelan Daniel then walked to put runners on first and second for the Oilers. A single by freshman Nick Palm sent Micale home. Daniel was later sent home thanks to a single by senior Cole Kwiatkowski.
With the score at 8-4, the Panthers faced a crucial moment in the top of the ninth inning, but Findlay managed to secure three outs and take the 8-4 win.
Starting on the mound for the Oilers was senior Logan Bragg. He pitched six innings allowing one run on eight hits. He struck out four and walked one. He was relieved by senior Sebastian Jones who threw the final three innings. He gave up three runs on five hits. He struck out two and walked one.
Micale and Farrar led Findlay's offense with their three-run home runs. Micale went 3-of-4 from the plate while scoring two runs. Farrar meanwhile was 1-of-5 from the plate, scoring one run. Both recorded three RBI in the contest.
Findlay will now take on the winner of the Tiffin vs. Northwood contest, tomorrow, Thursday, May 9 at 10:00 am at Prasco Park.
