Volleyball Falls to #14 Minn. Duluth in UP Open Finale

Houghton, Mich.- The University of Findlay's volleyball team concluded the UP Open on Saturday, Sep. 14. The contest, which took place in the Student Development Gym on the campus of Michigan Tech University, didn't end in favor of the Orange and Black. Playing their third nationally-ranked team in two days, Findlay suffered a 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-13, 25-22) loss at the hands of the fourteenth ranked, Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs.

The first set saw back-and-forth action as the score was tied nine times. With the score at 17-17, Findlay collected four consecutive points. They used that momentum to seal the first set which was ultimately capped off by a kill from junior Kenzie Hoelscher.

The second set remained tight, with the score neck-and-neck. The Oilers fought off two Bulldogs match points, but ultimately fell 25-23.

FIndlay struggled in the third as Minnesota Duluth proved why they are one of the top-teams in the nation. The Bulldog's went on a 14-4 run to open the set, a lead they would never relinquish, winning the set by twelve.

The Oilers battled in the fourth set, but it wasn't enough as Findlay fell in a 3-1 defeat.

As a team, Findlay hit .200, collecting 41 kills and committing 15 errors. Meanwhile, Minnesota Duluth recorded a .267 hitting percentage while amassing 60 kills with 21 errors.

Freshman Grace Auer played well on both sides of the ball. Offensively, she recorded eleven kills while hitting .360. Defensively, she recorded a team-high 15 digs and two blocks.

Sophomore Hannah Miller chipped in ten kills while also adding eleven digs. She also had four aces. Junior Alana Pohlman recorded eight kills while leading the team with three blocks.

Junior Emma White continues to run the offense, notching 32 assists.

Notably, senior Olviia Pearce had twelve digs while fellow senior Ava Doster chipped in eleven.

The Oilers will return to action, Wednesday, Sep. 18 when they host Heidelberg in their home opener. That game will begin at 7pm inside Croy Physical Education Center.
