#9 Oilers Bury Eagles with Big Second Half

Findlay, Ohio – The University of Findlay men's basketball team, ranked no. 9 in the country, continued to roll on Thursday, Jan. 16, picking up an impressive 95-77 victory over long-time rival, the Ashland University Eagles. That victory gives the Oilers a 15-1 record on the year with an 8-0 mark in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). Ashland falls to 9-7 (5-4) with the loss.

Findlay has now won 11 consecutive games which is the longest active winning streak in the G-MAC and the longest streak at UF since the 2018-19 campaign.

Clinging to a one-point lead at halftime, 41-40, the Oilers were in front despite a torrid shooting performance by the Eagles. AU managed to hit 17-of-28 (61%) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes but still trailed.

The second half was all Oilers.

Midway through the half, a 10-5 run was capped by a triple from freshman Ian Ioppolo that sent the crowd into a frenzy and forced a timeout by Ashland.

In the final ten minutes, the life was slowly squeezed out of the visiting team which was outscored 54-37 in the second half. Findlay would go on to an 18-point victory, right on their league-leading margin-of-victory average of 18.3.

Findlay shot 18-of-33 in the second half including 8-of-12 from three-point range. In total, the Oilers made 15 triples. UF also held an advantage on the glass, grabbing 41 rebounds to just 35 for Ashland.

Junior Jagger Landers led the way with a career-high 23 points, powered by a career-best 7-for-10 performance from three-point range. He also grabbed five rebounds.

Junior Mekhi Elmore scored 16 points while freshman Ian Ioppolo scored 13 and had four rebounds. Junior Max Roth chipped in with 12.

Freshman Alex Kendall was the leading rebounder, grabbing 11 boards to go along with seven points.

The Oilers will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 18 with a trip to Tiffin University. That game will start at 3 pm.
