Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bench Boosts #9 Oilers Past Cavaliers 90-79

Findlay, Ohio – The University of Findlay men's basketball team, ranked no. 9 in the country, faced long time rival, the Walsh University Cavaliers on Thursday, Jan. 30 in Croy Gymnasium. The Oilers, which had lost six consecutive games to the Cavs prior to this season, have now swept the team from North Canton this year after picking up a 90-79 victory. With that victory, the Oilers move to 18-2 (11-1 G-MAC) while Walsh falls to 7-11 (3-9 G-MAC).

The Cavs came out ready to play and drilled three triples in the opening four minutes of play to take a 13-7 lead. Findlay then subbed in its' second unit which tonight, would play a massive role in the outcome. Over the next four minutes the Oilers went on a 14-2 run, led by junior Mason Brandt who hit three triples in that stretch.

Findlay's lead would reach as much as 16 in the first half and the home team held a comfortable 48-38 lead at the midway point.

Walsh would make it interesting down the stretch, connecting on 7-of-10 during a two-minute stretch late in the second half. That run would cut Findlay's largest lead of the game, 78-60, down to single-digits at 86-77 as an uneasiness fell over the Croy crowd with two minutes to play.

That rally would not be enough as the Oilers went on to an 11-point victory.

Both teams shot well, the Oilers making 34-of-71 (48%) including 13-of-35 (37%) from three-point range and the Cavs hitting 29-of-60 (48%) and 12-of-28 (43%) from three. Findlay forced Walsh in 11 turnovers which turned into 14 points.

Where UF held a big advantage with its' production off the bench. The Oilers, which rank seventh in the country in bench scoring, got 55 points from its' non-starters compared to just 14 for Walsh. Of Findlay's six players who came off the pine, four scored in double figures including Brandt (13), freshman Alex Kendall (13), junior Max Roth (10), and freshman Ian Ioppolo (10).

Findlay's leading scorer was sophomore Anthony Johnson who scored a career-high 16 points, 13 of which came in the first half. In the game, he hit 6-of-8 from the floor including a career-high three triples.

Brandt and Roth led the team with six rebounds, apiece while Kendall grabbed five. Junior Mekhi Elmore, who had six points, led the way with four assists.

The Oilers will be back at home on Saturday, Feb. 1 when they take on the Cedarville Yellow Jackets. That game will tip at 3:00 pm.
