Week 8: Season Heats Up with #14 Oilers Hosting Ohio Dominican

The Game
At 7-0, the Oilers have jumped to #14 in the country and have allowed just four touchdowns in the past six weeks combined. However, the next four weeks are what will prove to be the defining stretch for this 2025 squad and that starts on Saturday, Oct. 25 at noon when Ohio Dominican comes to town. That game will begin a run of four consecutive games against opponents at or above the .500 mark, three of which will be against teams who still have hopes of winning the Great Midwest Athletic Conference championship.

#14 Findlay Oilers (7-0, 5-0 G-MAC)

2025 Findlay Football Coaching Staff

A start that Oilers fans haven't seen in 28 years, Findlay is 7-0 and remain as one of just eight unbeaten teams in the country. With every preseason goal still alive, things do not get any easier for the Oilers which begin a stretch of four games against teams whose combined in-conference record is 15-5.

The star this season for Findlay, which has climbed to a program-best No. 14 in the country in the latest American Football Coaches' Association (AFCA) poll, has been its' defense. Through seven games Findlay has allowed just 72 points, the fewest allowed through the first seven weeks of a season since 1996. That scoring defense of just 10.3 points per game ranks fourth in the country, one of six defense categories in which the Oilers rank in the top-ten in DII.

On the ground, the Oilers defense has been as stingy as any group in program history, allowing just 374 total rushing yards through seven games, the fewest allowed through seven games in Findlay football history.

Leading that side of the ball is the play of Findlay's two outstanding linebackers, senior Sam Weihrauch and sophomore Kevin Henderson. Weihrauch leads the team and ranks ninth in the G-MAC with 44 tackles while Henderson has tallied 35. The duo has combined for 18 tackles-for-loss with Henderson ranking third in the league with 9.5 to his credit. Behing those two, sophomore Jayon Harvey, senior Johnny Harris, and senior Christion Stokes have 35, 28, and 26 tackles, respectively. Harris has a pair of interceptions, the most on the team, and Stokes leads the team and ranks third in the G-MAC with eight pass breakups.

Facing an opponent that takes away the pass as well as any team in DII, the Oilers ground game will be critical. Jayden Farmer has been the featured back, carrying the ball 70 times for 313 yards and four touchdowns, but sophomore Christian Davis is not far behind, posting 64 carries for 288 yards. With those two providing a thunder-and-lighting type attack, Findlay has also used Dominic Bennett and Adam Nunes with some regularity. Bennett has 39 rushes for 245 yards while Nunes has 12 carries for 73 yards. As a unit, Findlay picks up 4.1 yards per carry, tied with Tiffin and Ashland for the best average in the G-MAC.

With two standout defense going at it on Saturday, special teams may play a big role. Freshman kicker Zachary Barzd has been solid in his debut season, making 7-of-8 this year with the lone miss coming in Week 2 against Wayne State.

About the Opponent – Ohio Dominican (3-3, 2-3 G-MAC)

As the 2025 season reaches its midpoint, the Ohio Dominican Panthers football team continues to uphold its reputation as one of the toughest programs to beat in Great Midwest. Known for their physicality and discipline, the Panthers have consistently competed at a high level under the leadership of Head Coach Kelly Cummings, who is now in his tenth season and holds a career record of 59 wins and 38 losses. Cummings became the program's winningest coach in 2022 and has guided the team to multiple winning seasons, including a 9-2 campaign in 2018 and seven wins in 2022, before a rebuilding year in 2023.

This season, the Panthers sit at 3-3 overall and 2-3 in G-MAC play, with their defense emerging as one of the best in the country. Ohio Dominican currently ranks first nationally in passing defense, allowing just 132.8 yards per game through the air, and eighth in total defense, surrendering only 266.2 yards per game. The defensive unit has been anchored by standout performances across the board.

Kaden Holmes, a defensive back from Fremont, Ohio, has contributed 2 solo tackles and continues to be a reliable presence in coverage. Mo Conteh, one of the team's most experienced defenders, leads the team with 33 total tackles, including 21 solo stops, and has added two tackles for loss and an interception. Up front, Quinten Wagers, a redshirt freshman defensive lineman, has burst onto the scene with five sacks, six quarterback hurries, and a forced fumble.

The Panthers' defensive depth extends beyond the stars. Linebacker Gabe Pence has added 33 tackles including nine against Ashland last week. Corners Mekhi Kilburn and Romearo Wells have been lock down all season as each have tallied five passes breakups including Wells who has has an interception.

Offensively, Ohio Dominican has struggled to find consistency, averaging just 16 points per game. A quarterback battle has unfolded between senior Drew Gallehue and redshirt freshman Carson Parker. Gallehue has completed 51 of 80 passes for 637 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception, with a passer rating of 136.39. Parker, who has started the last few games, has thrown for 453 yards and 2 touchdowns on 33-of-61 passing, with a rating of 102.43. He also adds mobility, rushing for 101 yards on 25 carries.

The ground game has been led by Markquan Rucker, who has rushed for 339 yards and 4 touchdowns on 80 carries, averaging 4.2 yards per attempt. His best performance came in the win over Tiffin, where he ran for 112 yards and a score. Complementing him is Nathan Webster, who has added 241 rushing yards and three touchdowns, giving the Panthers a solid one-two punch in the backfield.

In the receiving corps, Jayden Cornell has emerged as the top target, hauling in 20 receptions for 312 yards and one touchdowne, including two 100-yard games, 119 yards vs Tiffin and 105 yards in the recent matchup with Ashland. Conner Campbell has had at least two receptions in every game this year including against West Virginia Wesleyan where he had three receptions for 94 yards, a season-high.

Special teams have been solid, with kicker Henry Vakerics converting 4 of 5 field goal attempts and all 12 extra points, while punter Logan Ortt averages 36 yards per punt.

With upcoming matchups against Findlay, Lake Erie, Thomas More, and Hillsdale, the Panthers will look to lean on their elite defense and find offensive rhythm to finish the season strong. Despite the challenges, Ohio Dominican remains a gritty, resilient team, one that reflects the hard-nosed identity that has defined the program for years.
