Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Oilers Can’t Hold Off Second-Half Rally | Fall 66-58 at Wayne State

Detroit, Mich.- The University of Findlay women's basketball team made the short trip north to Motor City for a nonconference matchup with Wayne State University of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) on Saturday, Dec. 20. Findlay jumped out to a quick start and built a 17-point advantage, but the Oilers were unable to slow the Warriors in the second half, falling 66-58. With the loss, Findlay closes the calendar year at 5-6, while Wayne State improves to 7-3.

Findlay came out firing, opening on a 14-0 run fueled by threes from juniors Taylor Stanley and MacKenzie Schulz and strong inside play from senior Alyssa Ziehler. The Oilers led by as many as 17 points and finished the quarter up 22-12, shooting 44.4% from the field and 42.9% from deep.

Momentum shifted as Wayne State went on a 16-5 run late in the second quarter. Findlay struggled offensively, shooting just 27.3% and scoring only nine points. The Warriors closed the half ahead 33-31, erasing Findlay's early lead.

Findlay briefly regained the lead early in the third, but a costly stretch of turnovers and missed shots swung control back to the home team. Despite shooting 41.7% in the period, the Oilers were outscored 17-14 and faced a 50-45 deficit heading into the final frame.

The Oilers fought to close the gap, pulling within three points with under three minutes remaining, but couldn't capitalize on key possessions. Wayne State sealed the game at the free-throw line, while Findlay managed just 13 points on 31.3% shooting in the quarter.

Both teams finished with nearly identical shooting percentages, but Wayne State held key advantages in critical areas. Findlay shot 36.8% from the field, 29.2% from three, and 81.8% at the line, while Wayne State posted 36.9% overall, 24.2% from deep, and an impressive 90.9% on free throws. The Oilers were edged on the glass 43–37, and second-chance points proved pivotal as Wayne State converted 19 compared to Findlay's 12. Turnovers were another difference-maker: Findlay committed 13, leading to 24 points for Wayne State, while the Oilers managed just 13 points off turnovers.

Offensively, the Oilers were paced by Schulz, who finished with 14 points on 6-of-18 shooting from the field, including two makes from beyond the arc. She added five rebounds, one assist, and a steal. Stanley also turned in a
strong performance, scoring 11 points for double-digit output while leading the team with two assists and collecting four rebounds.

Ziehler contributed nine points and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds, while junior Addisyn Freeman added nine points and six rebounds.

Findlay will return to action on Monday, Jan. 5, continuing its road stretch with a trip to Ashland, Ohio, to face the Eagles at 5:30 pm.
