Findlay, Ohio – The University of Findlay men's basketball team dominated from start to finish, defeating The University of Olivet 95-70 on Tuesday, December 30 in the Croy Physical Education Center in non-conference play. The Oilers improve to 9-4 with the win while the Comets, who played the game as an exhibition, will not have their record of 2-7 impacted.
The game was tight early, but Findlay broke it open midway through the first half with an 11-0 run sparked by
Jagger Landers and
Mekhi Elmore. Landers knocked down a three and added a layup during the surge, while Elmore hit a triple and converted free throws after a steal. That stretch pushed the Oilers' lead into double digits, and they carried that momentum throughout the remainder of the game.
Olivet (2-7) hit 45.5% overall but struggled to keep pace, committing 27 turnovers that led to 41 Findlay points. The Comets managed 30 points in the paint and 19 fast-break points but trailed by as many as 31 in the second half.
Senior
Jagger Landers led all scorers with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including three 3-pointers. Senior
Mekhi Elmore added 16 points, six steals, and four rebounds while shooting 5-of-9 from the floor.
Redshirt freshman
Javonte Hill provided a spark with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including two threes. Senior
Anthony Johnson was nearly perfect, scoring 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting with four assists. Senior
Mason Brandt chipped in 12 points and a team-high six rebounds, while sophomore
Alex Kendall scored nine points and dished out four assists.
Findlay shot 45.5% in the first half and improved to 54.8% in the second, despite cooling from deep (2-of-9 after halftime). The Oilers' defense forced 27 turnovers and recorded 20 steals. Olivet was led by Conner Schipper with 15 points and Lee Hardy with 11.
The Oilers will be back on the court on Monday, Jan. 5 for a game at Ashland University, diving back into Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play.
