Game Recap: Baseball |

Oilers Split on Day 1 vs Golden Eagles

Charleston, W. Va. - The University of Findlay baseball team was back in action on Saturday, Mar. 1 as they traveled to West Virginia for a series match-up against the University of Charleston.  The two teams would split on day one, as the Oilers fell in an extra inning heartbreaker in the first game, before coming back and taking the second.  With today's result, Findlay's record now sits at 5-3.  Meanwhile, Charleston records their second win of the season and stands at 2-9.

Game 1 (7-10)
The first game of the day had no shortage of action, as both teams were looking to set the tone for the rest of the weekend.  The scoring would get started right away in the first inning, as the Golden Eagles were able to get on the board in the bottom half with a triple and a sacrifice fly to make the score 1-0.

The Oilers would remain quiet offensively until the top of the fourth inning, as RBI singles from juniors Mike Sciortino and Ryan Thompson, along with a throwing error by the Charleston third basemen led to Findlay putting three runs in the inning.  In the bottom half of the same inning Charleston would respond with a solo home run, cutting the Findlay lead to just one.

The Orange and Black would add three more to their lead in the top of the fifth, as RBIs from Keelan Daniel, Aiden Booth, and Thompson made the score 6-2.
After the Golden Eagles added two runs in the bottom of fifth, Colin Becker would come into the game in relief of Logan Bragg and get the Oilers out of the jam.  However, Charleston would push runs across in the sixth and the seventh to even the score at six.

With the game headed to extras, Findlay was able to push back ahead in the top of the eighth.  As Nick Palm singled home Theo Winings, who doubled to lead off the inning.  Unfortunately for the Oilers, the Golden Eagles would not be denied in the bottom half of the inning, as first baseman Casey Finck would end the game with a one out walk-off grand slam.

Game 2 (7-3)
Wanting to quickly erase from memory the result of the first game, the Oilers offense got off to a fast start.  In the top of the first, the first three Findlay hitters would reach base.  They would crack the scoreboard early as a product of a bases loaded walk to Daniel and a sacrifice fly from Booth, giving them a 2-0 advantage.

The Golden Eagles would respond, scoring a run in both the second and fourth innings to even things at two.  The game would remain quiet until the top of the sixth, when the Oilers were able to push three runs across.  These runs came from a Sciortino single to bring in freshman Mason Myers, along with Austin Adelman, who had a ball in play that resulted in two runs due to a throwing error from the Charleston second basemen.

The rest of the game would be all Findlay, as they would add two more runs in the top of the seventh by way of a Casey Maruniak homer and a score from Daniel in a first and third situation.  With the home run, Maruniak continues his red hot start to the season.  The junior now has a dozen hits, with three of them coming by way of the long ball.

Freshman Camdon Tuttle would come in and close the door in the seventh,  as he would strike out two and secure the Oilers a 7-3 victory.  Ethan Mohr would earn the win on the mound, his first of the season.  He would go six innings, and hold the Golden Eagles to three runs.  The junior would also finish with six strikeouts.
