Oilers Conclude March with a Split at Hillsdale

Hillsdale, Mich.- The University of Findlay softball team wrapped up their two-day road trip with a matchup against Hillsdale College on Friday, March 28. The Oilers, who hadn't defeated the Chargers since the 2023 Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Tournament, ended that streak with a split. Findlay dropped a tightly contested opener, 1-0, before bouncing back with an 8-4 victory in game two. The split moves Findlay to 19-9 overall and 6-4 in conference play, while Hillsdale now stands at 17-12 with a 3-1 G-MAC record.

Game One (L 1-0)
Hillsdale scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the second inning due to an error on freshman Abbi Poths but the defense was able to stop the threat, stranding two on base at the end of the frame.

Neither team managed to score over the next four innings. Findlay's best chance came in the top of the seventh when junior Alexys Antal doubled to left with one out. Junior Jenna Poulson took over as a pinch-runner, and back-to-back walks loaded the bases. However, Hillsdale's ace, Joni Russel, shut down the rally, retiring senior Hannah Baker and freshman Kenzie Woods to secure the win for the Chargers.

Junior Kayla Dykin took the loss in the circle, tossing all seven innings for the Orange and Black. She allowed just one run on eight hits, striking out two. WIth the loss, her record falls to 8-2 on the season.

Game Two (W 8-4)
Game two began quietly, with both teams held scoreless through the first two innings. Hillsdale broke the silence in the bottom of the third, plating two runs to take the lead.

Findlay responded in the top of the fourth, erupting for four runs. Sophomore Joslynne Frazier led off with a single to center, but back-to-back outs quickly put the Oilers in a tough spot. A walk put two runners on, and an error allowed Poths to score. Junior Keeley Murray followed with an RBI single to right, and junior Jenna Poulson delivered a two-run double, giving Findlay a 4-2 advantage.

Hillsdale answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game at 4-4.

The Oilers took control for good in the sixth, tacking on four more runs. Junior Aurora Lescody started the inning with a double to center and advanced to third before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Murray. Poulson doubled again and came home on a single from Alexys Antal. Frazier capped off the rally with a two-run single to right, sealing an 8-4 victory.

Senior Emma Jones earned the win, going the distance with a complete game. She allowed four runs on five hits while striking out five.
