Findlay Falls to Northwood in G-MAC Quarterfinals | Awaits NCAA Fate

Midland, Mich.- The University of Findlay women's basketball team's run in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Tournament ended in the first round on Tuesday, March 4. Facing fourth-seeded Northwood University, the Oilers fell short in a 71-66 battle despite having defeated the Timberwolves earlier in the season. The win marked Northwood's first-ever home conference tournament victory in program history. The loss brings Findlay's record to 20-10, while Northwood improves to 18-11.

Northwood opened the game with a quick 4-0 lead, their largest advantage of the half. However, back-to-back layups from junior Alyssa Ziehler sparked the Oilers' response, helping them take control and carry a three-point lead into the second quarter.

Despite offensive struggles, Findlay edged Northwood by a single point in the second quarter, extending their lead to four at halftime.

Northwood opened the second half with a layup to cut the deficit to two, followed by a two-minute scoring drought from both teams. A pair of Timberwolves free throws then tied the game at 35. Continuing a season-long trend, the Oilers struggled in the third quarter, getting outscored 20-13 by the home team.

Down 59-50 with 6:30 to play, Findlay fought back with an 11-5 run, shooting 4-of-5 from the field and 2-of-2 from three-point range. Trailing by three with 32 seconds left, the Oilers were forced to foul, but Northwood sank both free throws, sealing the game and handing Findlay the loss.

Findlay shot 26-of-67 (38.8%) from the field, including 7-of-21 (33.3%) from three-point range, while Northwood finished at 40.7% (24-of-59) despite struggling from deep, hitting just 2-of-15 (13.3%). A key factor in the game was Northwood's dominance in the paint, outscoring Findlay 38-28. The Timberwolves also forced 14 Oiler turnovers, converting them into 12 points.

Senior Kate Ellis led Findlay's offense, matching her career high with 29 points on 10-of-17 shooting, including 3-of-5 from three-point range. She was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line while adding five rebounds and two steals.

Sophomore MacKenzie Schulz contributed nine points and four rebounds, while Alyssa Ziehler anchored the glass with a team-high 12 rebounds, including six on the offensive end, along with eight points.

Despite their quarterfinal loss in the Great Midwest Tournament, the Oilers remain in contention for an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Playoffs. The selection show airs Sunday, March 9, at 10:30 p.m.
