Oilers Pick Up Two Wins on Day Three of the Spring Games

Clermont, Fla.- The University of Findlay's softball team continued play at The Spring Games, Sunday, March 9. They picked up wins against both Minnesota Duluth and Winona State to move to 11-3 on the year. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth fall to 17-6 and Winona State moves to 17-4.

Game One vs. Minnesota Duluth (W 5-4 | 9inn.)
The Oilers fell behind early, giving up three runs in the first inning.

The game remained scoreless over the next three innings until Findlay broke through in the fifth. Junior Aurora Lescody led off with a single through the left side, followed by a base hit from sophomore Anna Jones. Freshman Abby Poths then delivered a clutch double, driving in both Lescody and Jones. Moments later, freshman Meghan Heinsman tied the game with an RBI single that brought Poths home.

The sixth and seventh innings remained scoreless, sending the game into extras.

Findlay struck first in the ninth, taking advantage of the international tiebreaker rule, which placed Abby Poths on second to start the inning. After a leadoff lineout, freshman Meghan Heinsman drew a walk, putting runners on first and second. Junior Alexys Antal then ripped a double to right field, scoring Poths and advancing Heinsman to third. Sophomore Makayla Cook followed with a pinch-hit sacrifice, bringing Heinsman home. The Oilers then held the Bulldogs to just one run in the bottom of the ninth to secure a 5-4 comeback victory.

Junior Kayla Dykin earned the win in relief of Alexys Antal. Antal started the game, pitching six strong innings while allowing one run on five hits and striking out five. Dykin took over in the final three innings, surrendering just one run to secure the victory.

Poths paced the Findlay offense, going 2-for-4 at the plate, including a crucial two-RBI double in the fifth inning. Jones also went 2-for-4 and scored a run.

Game Two vs. Winona State (W 1-0)
After setting down the first three batters in order, the Oilers scored the game's only run in the bottom of the first.

Freshman Kenzie Woods, who recorded Findlay's lone hit, singled to right field. She advanced to second on a groundout, moved to third on a passed ball, and crossed home plate on a sacrifice bunt by junior Annika Bredel.

The next five innings remained scoreless.

Entering the final frame, the Warriors led off with a single to left, followed by a sacrifice bunt that advanced the runner to second. Another single pushed them to third, putting the tying run just 60 feet away. With two outs still needed, the Oilers delivered a clutch double play to seal the win. A flyout to Lescody marked the second out, and she quickly fired to catcher Makayla Cook, who tagged the runner at home to end the game.

Senior Emma Jones went the distance for the Orange and Black, securing the win with a complete-game shutout. She allowed six hits, struck out three, and improved her season record to 4-2.
