Detroit, Mich - The University of Findlay baseball team was back in action on Tuesday, Apr. 1, when they traveled to Detroit to take on Wayne State University in a midweek contest. Despite being outhit 12-5, a ninth inning run from the Oilers would propel them to a 4-3 victory over the Warriors. After extending their winning streak to seven games, Findlay's record now stands at 15-11. Meanwhile, Wayne State falls to 12-15.
The Oilers would lean on their bullpen in this midweek staff game, using seven pitchers in the match-up. Freshman
Sebastian Stevens and
JJ Hartman would throw the first three innings and would be stellar. Stevens would strike out three in two innings of work, while Hartman would punch out two in just one inning.
The game would remain scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when Wayne State would finally break the ice with an infield single to take a 1-0 lead. The Oilers would respond in the top of the sixth, as they added two runs by way of a
Theo Winings double, along with a sacrifice fly from reigning Great Midwest Athletic Conference player of the week,
Luke Senften.
After Findlay added another run in the top of the seventh from a
Mike Sciortino RBI single, Wayne State would respond with two runs of their own to knot the game up at three.
Looking to break the tie in the ninth, the Oilers would get a runner in scoring position after a walk and sacrifice bunt. Following the bunt, Sciortino would put a ball in play and force a throwing error from the Warrior third basemen, allowing pinch runner
Michael Russ to score the go-ahead run.
Becoming a staple in the back end of the Oilers bullpen, Camden Tuttle was once more called on to slam the door. The freshman would work around two hits to earn his sixth save of the year, along with giving the Orange and Black the 4-3 victory.
