Owensboro, Ky. – The University of Findlay men's tennis team, the third seed in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Championship Tournament, won its' semifinal match on Friday, April 25, taking down Northwood University, seeded second, by a score of 4-0. The victory sends the Oilers to Saturday's championship match for a second consecutive year and third time in four years.
Findlay will take on the Tiffin University Dragons, the tournament's top seed and three-time defending champion of the event. That match will be played at 2 pm EST.
Findlay quickly won the doubles point as
Dallas Ramsay and
Matthis Veniard swept their opponent at second doubles. Ten minutes later Clément Andrieu and
Runa Kagoshima closed out their match at third doubles, winning 6-3.
In singles,
Luigi Bove was the first domino to fall, winning at second singles 6-4, 6-1. Findlay made the score 3-0 over Northwood seven minutes later when Clément Andrieu closed out a two-set win over his opponent at third singles, winning 6-3, 6-3.
The match of the day took place at first singles where
Soh Kuyama and Max Wild were locked in a heated battle that would ultimately go to three sets. Kuyama won the first set in a tiebreaker, but Wild, trailing 4-3 in the second set, won the final three games to force a decisive third set.
Kuyama jumped in front, winning the first game and, in the second, a second unsportsmanlike penalty was called on Wild which put Kuyama up 2-0 before a sweep in the third game made it 3-0. Leading 40-15 in the final game, Kuyama sealed the win for the Oilers, clinching the match and sending UF to the championship.
