Oilers Fall Short of Comeback | Fall to Drury 11-7

University Center, Mich.- The University of Findlay softball team began their run at the NCAA Division II Softball Midwest Regional on Thursday, May 8 at the Saginaw Valley Softball Complex on the campus of Saginaw Valley State University. The fourth-seeded Oilers faced off against the fifth-seeded Drury Panthers of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) in the opening game of the event. The Oilers fell behind early, mounted a comeback, but ultimately came up short, losing 11-7. With the loss Findlay falls to 33-14 while Drury improves to 33-21.

Hailing from Springfield, Mo., the Panthers opened the scoring with a run in the first inning. A two-run homer in the top of the second extended their lead to 3-0. Drury then broke the game open in the third, scoring five runs without recording a hit, aided by two errors and a pair of wild pitches, to take a commanding 8-0 lead after three innings.

The momentum began to shift in the bottom of the third when junior Kayla Dykin launched her first home run of the season, putting Findlay on the board and cutting the deficit to 8-2. The Oilers then held the Panthers scoreless in the top of the fourth, setting up an opportunity to build on their offense.

Junior Aurora Lescody kicked off the bottom of the fourth with a double down the left field line. A groundout moved her to third, and a single by junior Kora Novarro brought her home, trimming the deficit to 8-3. Freshman Meghan Heinsman was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases for the Oilers. A wild pitch allowed Novarro to score, narrowing the gap to four. With two outs, sophomore Anna Jones singled to left to drive in another run. Junior Annika Bredel, named All-Region by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) earlier in the day, followed with a two-RBI single to left, bringing Findlay within one at 8-7.

The Panthers put the game to rest in the top of the fifth with a three-run home run. They would go on to take the 11-7 win and hand the Oilers their first loss of the double-elimination tournament.

Junior Alexys Antal started in the circle for the Oilers, pitching the first two innings and allowing three runs on five hits, ultimately taking the loss to fall to 7-5 on the season. She was relieved by Kayla Dykin, who pitched one inning and surrendered five runs despite giving up only one hit. Senior Emma Jones closed out the game with four strong innings, allowing three runs on just one hit.

Offensively, Kayla Dykin and Annika Bredel led the charge, each driving in two runs. Aurora Lescody and Meghan Heinsman also contributed with extra-base hits in the game.

Findlay will now face the loser of the (1) Saginaw Valley State and (8) Ferris State tomorrow, Friday, May 9 at 1:30 p.m..
