#16 Women’s Tennis Makes Statement in Spring Opener Against UIS

Findlay, Ohio – The University of Findlay women's tennis team, ranked #16 in the country, defended its home court in convincing fashion on Sunday, Feb. 1, defeating the University of Illinois-Springfield 7-0 at the Findlay YMCA East.

The Oilers, playing in their first match of the spring season, dropped only four games across three doubles matches to secure the opening point and maintained that momentum through singles play, winning all six matchups in straight sets.

Findlay set the tone early in doubles competition. The No. 2 pairing of Ivanova Lucero and Maria Valentina Salek Rivero blanked Jane Carter and Cristina Mendoza Romero, 6-0. Moments later, Polina Zaytseva and Ivana Gombitova secured the doubles point with a 6-1 victory at the No. 3 spot. At No. 1 doubles, Anamarija Kovacevic and Audrey Ouellet completed the sweep with a 6-3 win.

In singles action, Zaytseva anchored the Oilers with a flawless performance at the No. 4 position, defeating Alisha Deogaonkar 6-0, 6-0.

At the top of the lineup, Kovacevic handled UIS's Mendoza Romero 6-0, 6-2. Salek mirrored that scoreline at No. 2 singles, defeating Ema Norma Bordean 6-0, 6-2. With her win, Kovacevic now has 64 career singles wins which ties the program record set by Elina Ivanova who played at UF from 2021-24.

Audrey Ouellet surrendered just one game in her match at No. 3, winning 6-1, 6-0, while Lucero picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 5 spot. Gombitova rounded out the scoring for Findlay with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6.

The Oilers return to the court on Friday, Feb. 6 when they head to take on #19 Grand Valley State.
