#16 Women's Tennis Falls in Ranked Showdown

Allendale, Mich.- The University of Findlay women's tennis team dropped a 4-2 decision to Grand Valley State on Friday, Feb. 6. The matchup between the sixteenth-ranked Oilers and nineteenth-ranked Lakers featured several closely contested flights, with play remaining tight throughout the day. With the loss, Findlay falls to 1-1 on the year while Grand Valley State improves to 3-0.

Doubles play opened with Findlay earning the opening point by winning two of three matches. Senior Anamarija Kovacevic and senior Audrey Ouellet picked up a 6–3 victory at number one doubles, while Grand Valley State answered with a win at number two. The doubles point was decided at number three, where sophomore Polina Zaytseva and sophomore Ivana Gombitova secured a 6–3 win to give Findlay the early 1–0 lead.

However, the host Lakers responded in singles play, winning four of the five completed matches to secure the team victory.

Findlay's lone singles point came from Anamarija Kovacevic at the number three position. She defeated Ipek Sakiroglu in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3. With the victory, Kovacevic became the winningest singles player in University of Findlay history, recording the 65th win of her career.

Grand Valley State picked up wins at the number one, two, four, and six spots. The match at number four singles was a three-set battle, with GVSU's Valentina Mozas rallying to defeat Audrey Ouellet 3-6, 7-6, 6-3.

The match at number five singles was left unfinished. Findlay's Polina Zaytseva led Anna Soteras 7-5, 5-3 when the team match was decided.

Findlay will continue its road swing on Saturday, Feb. 7, traveling to Ferris State for a 10 a.m. matchup.
