Long-Time Drought Ends Against #22 Wayne State | Win 4-3

Detroit, Mich. - The No. 16 University of Findlay women's tennis team secured a 4-3 victory on Saturday, Feb. 7. The Oilers defeated No. 22 Wayne State University in a hard-fought contest on the road in Detroit. 

In the doubles matches, the Oilers won two out of the three matches to secure the opening point. Anamarija Kovacevic and Audrey Ouellet won the No. 1 spot with a score of 6-4 over Malak Arafat and Dea Gorgidze. The No. 3 pairing of Ivana Gombitova and Maria Batinic dominated in a 6-1 victory over Selin Kayakent and Rebecca Laynes.

The singles matches were close with three out of the six matches requiring a third set. 

The Oilers secured three singles victories, highlighted by a dominant comeback from Ivana Gombitova at No. 6. After dropping the opening set 3-6, she surged back to win 6-1 and 6-0. Ivanova Lucero also delivered in a pressure-filled match at No. 5, grinding out a straight-sets victory. At the top of the lineup, Anamarija Kovacevic earned a win after her opponent retired early in the match.

This is the first time the Oilers have ever beaten Wayne State in women's tennis. The Oilers improved to 3-1 on the season. 

The Oilers return to action Tuesday, Feb. 17 with another away trip to Indianapolis, Indiana to battle University of Indianapolis.
