Findlay Sweeps Final Day of Highlands Classic with Wins Over West Liberty and Wheeling

Tridelphia, W. Va.- The University of Findlay softball team wrapped up the Highlands Classic on Sunday, Feb. 22 with matchups against West Liberty University and Wheeling University. The Oilers came away with a pair of victories, defeating the Hilltoppers 12-6 and the Cardinals 7-2. With the sweep, Findlay improves to 4-1 on the season, while West Liberty drops to 2-6 and Wheeling falls to 0-3.

Game One vs. West Liberty (W 12-6)
The Oilers came out swinging in the top of the first. After Findlay put runners on, senior Alexys Antal delivered an RBI double to get UF on the board, and Aurora Lescody followed with a hit up the middle that drove in two more to make it 3-0 early. West Liberty answered back across the first four innings to knot things up, and the teams were even at 6-6 heading into the sixth.

That's when Findlay's offense erupted. Senior Anika Bredel started the rally with an RBI double, and sophomore Kenzie Woods delivered the biggest swing of the day with a two-run triple to push UF in front 9-6. The line kept moving as freshman Kaylynn Carter knocked a two-run single, and Macee Heinsman capped the frame with an RBI single, turning a tie game into a 12-6 advantage that held the rest of the way.

Woods, Carter, senior Aurora Lescody, and freshman Brielle Raus each drove in two runs in the contest. Lescody led the offense at the plate, going 3-for-4, while Carter, Bredel, and Heinsman added two hits apiece. Antal recorded just one hit but reached base five times thanks to four walks and scored three runs.

Freshman Kaylynn Carter worked just over five innings to earn the win in the circle, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out three. Sophomore Taylor Post came on in relief and closed out the final 1.1 innings, surrendering two runs on four hits with two strikeouts.

Game Two vs. Wheeling (W 7-2)
Findlay wasted no time seizing control, striking in the opening inning and never looking back. Sophomore Meghan Heinsman provided the first big blow, ripping a two-RBI double to plate freshman Jenna Dee and senior Annika Bredel for an early 2-0 advantage.

The Oilers widened the gap in the third, scoring three more runs. Heinsman continued her standout day with an RBI triple, while Findlay kept the pressure on with timely situational hitting. Senior Kora Navarro added an RBI groundout, and sophomore Jasalyn Sartin followed with a run-scoring single to push the lead to 5-0.

Wheeling got on the board in the fourth with an unearned run, but Findlay quickly answered in the bottom half. J. Dee delivered an RBI double to bring home sophomore Kenzie Woods, restoring a comfortable cushion at 6-1.

Findlay added another run in the sixth when J. Dee drove in a run with a groundout. Wheeling attempted a late push in the seventh with an RBI double, but the Oilers' early offensive surge proved more than enough to secure the victory.

Heinsman paced the offense, going 2-for-4 with both hits going for extra bases. She drove in a team-high three runs and scored once. J. Dee was also a major contributor at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while senior Jenna Poulson added a strong performance of her own with three hits in four at-bats.

Senior Kayla Dykin earned the win in the circle to move to 1-0 on the season. She struck out a career-high 11 in just over six innings of work, allowing only one run on five hits while issuing a single walk. Her 11 strikeouts are the most by a Findlay pitcher since Emma Jones fanned 11 against Malone on April 27, 2025. Freshman Sophie Retton came on in relief, facing four batters and surrendering two hits and one run.

Findlay returns to action with a trip to Melbourne, Florida, for the Space Coast Spring Games, where the Oilers will play ten games from Sunday, March 1 through Saturday, March 7.
