Hillsdale, Mich. - The University of Findlay women's basketball team dropped a 75–45 decision to Hillsdale College on Thursday, February 26, at Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena in Great Midwest Athletic Conference action. Findlay falls to 14-12 overall and 10-9 in the G-MAC, while Hillsdale improves to 15-10 (11-8 G-MAC).
The Oilers battled through a tightly contested first half that featured five ties and two lead changes. A three-pointer from junior
MacKenzie Schulz late in the second quarter evened the score at 19-19, and senior
Ariyah Douglas converted two free throws in the closing seconds to knot the game at 21-21.
Hillsdale answered with a layup in the final moments to take a slim 23-21 advantage into halftime.
The Chargers seized control in the third quarter, opening the half on a 10-0 run and shooting a blistering 71 percent (10-of-14) from the floor in the period, including 4-of-6 from three-point range.
Hillsdale outscored Findlay 28-11 in the period to extend its lead to 51-32 heading into the fourth. The hosts continued their offensive surge in the final frame, shooting 64.7 percent and pulling away for the 30-point win.
Schulz led the Oilers with 16 points, knocking down four three-pointers. Douglas added 11 points off the bench, while senior
Alyssa Ziehler recorded a team-high 13 rebounds to go along with eight points. Junior
Addisyn Freeman contributed nine rebounds, helping Findlay hold a slight 44-43 edge on the glass.
Findlay struggled to find its rhythm offensively, finishing the night shooting a season-low 22.4 percent (15-of-67) from the floor and 14.8 percent (4-of-27) from three-point range, the second-lowest three-point percentage this season.
Hillsdale shot 48.4 percent overall and held a 42-22 advantage in points in the paint. Savannah Smith paced the Chargers with 19 points, and Ellie Bruce provided a spark off the bench with 11. Hillsdale's depth proved pivotal, as its bench outscored Findlay's 34-17.
The Oilers look to regroup as they continue conference play when they play host to Ashland on Saturday, February 28th with tip-off at 1 p.m. This defeat also ensures that should the Oilers make the G-MAC Tournament, they will be doing so on the road as the loss, paired with a Walsh win over Ashland today, guarantees that UF cannot reach the fourth-seed.
