#16 Oilers Back on Track with 5-2 Win at Ferris State

Big Rapids, Mich. – The No. 16 University of Findlay women's tennis team returned to the win column on Saturday, Feb. 7, defeating Ferris State University 5-2 in a hard-fought road contest in Big Rapids.

The Oilers (2-1) set the tone early by sweeping the doubles competition to secure the opening point. At the No. 1 spot, Anamarija Kovacevic and Audrey Ouellet cruised to a 6-2 victory over Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrer and Ayva Johnstone. The No. 2 pairing of Ivanova Lucero and Maria Valentina Salek Rivero clinched the point with a 6-4 win, while Ivana Gombitova and Polina Zaytseva completed the sweep with a gritty 7-5 victory at No. 3.

Singles play was a battle, with four of the six matches requiring a deciding third set.

Findlay's Anamarija Kovacevic continued her strong weekend at No. 2 singles, defeating Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Ivanova Lucero also picked up a straight-set victory at No. 6, holding off Ainzley Zulueta 6-4, 7-6.

The remaining points were decided in three sets. At No. 3 singles, Valentina Salek outlasted Yara Madi in a lengthy match, winning 6-3, 6-7, 7-5. Polina Zaytseva was the clinching point at the No. 5 spot, recovering from a second-set stumble to defeat Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrer 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.

Ferris State earned points at the No. 1 and No. 4 positions, both in three-set battles. Madeline Peisley defeated Maria Batinic 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 at the top spot, while Ayva Johnstone edged Audrey Ouellet 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 4.

Findlay returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 14 with a trip to Detroit, Michigan to take on Wayne State.
