Oilers Drop 8-7 Overtime Decision at Wheeling

Wheeling, W. Va. - The University of Findlay women's lacrosse team lost a tight 7-8 battle against the Wheeling University Cardinals. The two teams matched up Saturday, March 14 in Wheeling, West Virginia. 

The Cardinals started strong with three goals within the first ten minutes of the period. The Oilers finally got onto the score board with a little over two minutes left in the first. The goal came from sophomore Cora West but was matched soon after by another Wheeling goal to make it 4-1 to end the first.

The Oilers came out strong in the second period by scoring the only two goals of the period to make the score at halftime 4-3 to the home side. The two Oiler goals came from freshman Brooke Hermann and freshman Ella Predina who was assisted by junior Rebecca Chmiel.

In the third period, Wheeling struck first to make the score 5-3. Findlay responded by two quick goals from Cora West, assisted by freshman Lauren Larochelle, and Rebecca Chmiel to tie the game up at 5-5. Wheeling then scored again but it was matched by a second goal from Rebecca Chmiel. Just before the end of the third sophomore Amelia Dillon scored to make it 7-6 to the Oilers but the home side responded to tie it back up to end the period.

Wheeling scored the only goal of the overtime period to see out the 8-7 win.

West and Chmiel led the offensive effort for the Oilers with two goals apiece, while Dillon, Hermann, and Predina each added one. Chmiel also recorded an assist to finish with three points in the contest. In goal, Caroline Weber made nine saves for Findlay.

Findlay finished the game with 27 shots compared to Wheeling's 24 and held advantages in ground balls (16-11) and draw controls (9-8).


The Oilers will hope to get back to winning ways on Thursday, March 19 when they are back at home to take on Malone in their Great Midwest Athletic Conference opener.
