Findlay, Ohio - The No. 44 University of Findlay men's tennis team capped off a spectacular weekend of competition with a commanding 7-0 sweep over Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) rival Ashland University on Sunday, March 22.
The Oilers took control of the match right out of the gate, sweeping all three doubles courts to secure the opening point. The No. 2 pairing of
Matthis Veniard and
Soh Kuyama finished first, making quick work of Kaj Salzano and Reid Opel with a 6-2 victory. Clement Andrieu and
Grant Hawkins clinched the point at the No. 1 flight, defeating Tomas Paskauskas and Ryohei Miyake 6-3.
Nicolo Lippolis and
Runa Kagoshima completed the doubles sweep with a matching 6-3 win at No. 3 over Doug Cree and Jonathan Frost.
Transitioning to singles play with a 1-0 lead, the Oilers proved too much for the Eagles, winning five of the six flights in straight sets.
Soh Kuyama set the pace at the top of the lineup, cruising past Paskauskas 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
Matthis Veniard followed suit at the No. 3 spot with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Frost, and Aleksander Ivancevic mirrored that dominance with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Eduardo Lima at No. 4.
The most competitive match of the afternoon came at the No. 2 flight. Clement Andrieu took the first set 6-4 against Salzano, but the Ashland competitor answered with a 7-5 second set to force a 10-point match tiebreaker. Andrieu won the tiebreaker 10-5 to preserve the team shutout.
In the bottom third of the lineup,
Runa Kagoshima earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles, while
Nicolo Lippolis closed out the perfect afternoon for the Oilers by defeating Opel 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 6 flight.
Findlay continues G-MAC play on March 27 with a trip to Hillsdale College.
