Bowling Green, Ohio – The University of Findlay baseball team continued to roll on Wednesday, March 25, taking down Division I Bowling Green State University on the diamond by a score of 12-7. That win is the eighth straight for the Oilers and moves the team's record to 16-9 overall while the Falcons, playing just their fifth game on the newly renovated Steller Field, drop to 7-15.
Wednesday night's win over BGSU is Findlay's 18th in the all-time series, but the first against the Falcons since 1978. The 12 runs by the Oilers are also the third-most ever scored by a Findlay squad against BG and the most since April 21, 1922 when the then Findlay College picked up a 22-2 victory.
Playing on a picture-perfect day for the end of March, the Oilers never backed down from their DI opponent, taking it to the Falcons early in the contest. Three hits in the first inning led to a pair of runs and an early 2-0 lead.
Two innings later, despite being just the third inning of play, Findlay began to bludgeon the Falcons pitching staff, ripping hit after hit to all but end the game just 45 minutes into the contest. Sophomore Mason Myers, the reigning Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) North Division Player of the Week, started things off with a single and was followed by a mile-high big fly by junior Luke Senften to double the Oilers' lead to 4-0. A double by senior Gavyn Smith, single by junior Aiden Booth, single by freshman Evan Reiter, and single by sophomore Garrett Given saw a couple more runs score and forced BG's starter out of the game.
On the first pitch out of the bullpen, senior Mike Sciortino got his turn to trot around on the new turf field, blasting a ball over the wall in left to put UF on top 9-0. That bomb capped a seven-run inning in which the Oilers had eight hits.
Another run in the fifth, coming on an RBI double by Senften, made the score 10-0.
BGSU did mount a bit of a comeback, pulling to within three runs at 10-7 through seven innings, but two insurance runs by Findlay in the ninth gave the Oilers a five-run cushion.
That was plenty for senior Colin Becker who, despite loading the bases, continued his stellar season by keeping the Falcons off the board.
Findlay scored their 12 runs on 19 hits while BGSU scored their seven runs on nine hits. Findlay's 19 hits are the second-most surrendered by the Falcons this season, second only to Georgia Tech who had 22 knocks against BG on opening weekend.
Every player in the Oilers' starting lineup had a base hit on Wednesday night, four of which had at least three hits. Those players included Myers, Senften, Smith, and Booth. Senften was a triple shy of the cycle and had three RBI and three runs scored while Booth led the way with four hits, all singles, and three RBI.
Sophomore lefty Sebastian Stevens started on the mound and went a solid 3.0 innings, allowing no runs on three hits while striking out three to pick up the win. Junior Dylan Rouse came out of the bullpen, throwing 2.0 innings without allowing a run or a hit. He walked three and struck out two. That duo kept the Falcons scoreless for five innings which proved critical in the outcome.
Findlay continues G-MAC play this weekend with games on the road against Cedarville University. Those games will be played on Saturday, March 28, and Monday, March 30.
