Findlay Punches Ticket to G-MAC Semifinal with Win at Thomas More

Crestview Hills, Ky.- The University of Findlay women's basketball team defeated the Thomas More University Saints in the quarterfinal round of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Basketball Championship on Tuesday, March 3. The sixth-seeded Oilers used a dominant second quarter to secure a 64–56 victory over the third-seeded Saints. With the win, Findlay improves to 16–12 on the season, while Thomas More falls to 22–7 and will likely see its season come to an end, though the Saints still have a slim chance of earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Midwest Regional.

Findlay opened the game in a back-and-forth battle with the Saints, as neither team held a lead larger than three points early on. However, beginning around the four-minute mark, Thomas More put together a 7-0 run to pull ahead and carried a six-point advantage into the second quarter.

The Oilers flipped the script in the second quarter, holding the Saints to just five points over the ten-minute frame. During that stretch, the Orange and Black limited Thomas More to 1-of-16 shooting (6.25%) from the field, with three of those five points coming at the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Findlay shot 8-of-19 (42.11%) and used a 10-0 run that spanned just over three minutes to seize control of the game. By the end of the quarter, the Oilers had built a six-point lead heading into the break.

Thomas More came out strong in the third quarter, trimming Findlay's lead to just two points at the 7:23 mark. The Oilers quickly responded with a 6-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from junior Taylor Stanley to push the lead back to eight. Moments later, junior Sophie Huffman finished a fast-break layup as time expired in the quarter, sending Findlay into the final frame with a ten-point advantage.

The Saints cut the deficit to three with just under two minutes remaining, but senior Ariyah Douglas responded with back-to-back three-pointers to keep Thomas More at bay. Late fouls by the Saints attempted to extend the game, but Findlay held firm and secured the eight-point victory.

Findlay was led by Douglas, who went an impressive 5-of-9 from beyond the arc to finish with a season-high and career-high 19 points. Stanley also had a strong outing, scoring 12 points while leading the team with four assists. She was effective from three-point range as well, knocking down 3-of-5 attempts.

Senior Alyssa Ziehler recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Addisyn Freeman also made her presence felt on the glass, pulling down eight rebounds.

Findlay will return to action in the G-MAC Women's Basketball Championship Semifinals, traveling to Northwood University to compete in the remainder of the tournament. The Oilers will face Malone University on Friday, March 6, with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
