Tiffin, Ohio – The University of Findlay baseball team swept a doubleheader against Gannon University on Friday, March 6 in Tiffin, Ohio, opening a four-game series with the Golden Knights. The Oilers won the day's opener by a massive score of 19-4 before securing a 10-5 victory in the nightcap. Those two games give UF a record of 7-7 on the year while Gannon moves to 4-5. The 29 combined runs are the most in a doubleheader for the Oilers in two years.
Game 1 (W 19-4)
Findlay blew the game wide open early with an absolute barrage in the first three innings. The Oilers plated four runs in the first inning, added three in the second, and erupted for seven runs in the third to take a commanding 14-0 lead. Findlay would add three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to cap their scoring at 19. This marks the most runs in a single game for the program in two years.
The offense was historically dominant, featuring four triples which tied the single-game team record set in 2022 against Malone. Nick Palm anchored the effort by tying a program record with two triples in the game, matching a mark set by Casey Maruniak in 2023. Palm finished 4-for-5 with four runs scored, a double, and five RBIs.
Luke Senften was also stellar at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBIs. The rperformances by Palm and Senften marked the first time in the NCAA era of the program that two players have recorded five RBIs in the same game. Keelan Daniel and Mason Myers also contributed heavily to the hit parade, recording four and three hits, respectively.
Starting pitcher Ethan Mohr earned the win for the Oilers on the mound, holding the Gannon offense at bay while the Findlay bats built a massive lead.
Game 2 (W 10-5)
After the offensive explosion in the opener, the Oilers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning of the second game. Gannon responded by chipping away at the lead, scoring single runs in the second and third innings, and adding two runs in the fourth to briefly take a 4-3 advantage.
Findlay quickly answered in the bottom of the fifth inning, plating two runs to retake the lead at 5-4. The Oilers then extended their advantage in the late innings, scoring three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to pull away. Gannon managed one final run in the top of the ninth, but it was not enough.
On the mound, starting pitcher Carson Mellott took a no-decision. Colin Becker picked up the win in relief for the Oilers, his third win of the year. He tossed 4.2 innings out of the bullpen and allowed just one run while striking out five.
Offensively, Keelan Daniel had a big game, going 4-for-5 with two stolen bases and two runs scored. Casey Maruniak provided the power with a home run, finishing with two hits, two runs, and three RBIs. Nick Palm added three hits, an RBI, a double, and two runs scored, while Luke Senften and Mason Myers each recorded three hits to keep the lineup moving throughout the game.
The series will conclude with a doubleheader on Sunday, March 8 in Tiffin, Ohio at Heidelberg University. Those games will start at noon.
