Softball Splits Saturday of Florida Swing, Two Games Remain

Melbourne, Fla.- The University of Findlay softball team continued play at the Space Coast Spring Games on Friday, March 6, splitting a pair of contests. The Oilers picked up a win in the opener against the University of Bridgeport before falling to Florida Institute of Technology in the nightcap. With the split, Findlay moves to 11-2 on the season.

Game One vs. Bridgeport (W 17-4)
The Oilers picked up right where they left off, extending their win streak to nine games with a dominant 17-4 victory. With the loss, Bridgeport falls to 7-4 on the season.

After two scoreless innings, Bridgeport struck first with a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead heading into the fourth. The inning proved to be the turning point as junior Anna Jones delivered an RBI single that plated sophomore Abbi Poths and senior Alexys Antal following a throwing error in center field. Senior Aurora Lescody then added another run with a sacrifice bunt to keep the rally going. Freshman Jenna Dee highlighted the inning with a two-RBI triple, and Antal later drove in the eighth run of the frame for the Oilers. Findlay erupted for eight runs on eight hits in the inning while also capitalizing on two Purple Knights errors to take an 8-2 lead.

The Oilers continued to add on in the later innings with several key extra-base hits, including a triple from Annika Bredel and multiple run-producing hits from Dee that helped extend the lead, ultimately securing a 17-4 victory.

Offensively, Dee led the way for Findlay with two hits in three at-bats while driving in three runs. Bredel added a hit of her own that produced two RBI. Poulson led the team in scoring, crossing the plate three times in four at-bats while recording two hits.

Antal earned the win in the circle, tossing 4.1 innings while allowing four runs on ten hits to improve to 4-1 on the season. Freshman Sophie Retton came on in relief and pitched the final 2.2 innings, giving up just two hits while holding Bridgeport scoreless.

Game Two vs. Florida Tech (L 3-0)

Early runs from the Panthers proved to be enough as Findlay struggled to generate offense, allowing Florida Tech to secure a 3-0 victory. With the win, Florida Tech improves to 15-3-1 on the season.

Florida Tech set the tone early, using a pair of walks and aggressive baserunning to move runners into scoring position before a stealing home and a double gave them a quick 2-0 advantage in the first inning. The Panthers later added an insurance run in the third inning to extend the lead to three.

Findlay had chances to respond but was unable to deliver the timely hit. The Oilers recorded four hits in the game, including singles from sophomore Kenzie Woods, freshman Jenna Dee, senior Alexys Antal, and senior Cassie Warner. In the sixth inning, Dee singled and Antal followed with a base hit to put two runners on base, but the rally was cut short as Florida Tech escaped the inning without allowing a run.

In the circle, senior Kayla Dykin went the distance for the Orange and Black. She pitched all seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out four.

Findlay will return to action on Saturday, March 7, facing Charleston and Winona State to close out its Florida swing.
