Sweep of KWC Puts Softball Back in the Win Column

Owensboro, Ky.- The University of Findlay softball team swept the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers on Sunday, April 12 at Foster Field. The Oilers took both games by a score of 7-0 to improve to 29-9 on the year and 12-3 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play. Meanwhile, the Panthers fall to 3-26 on the season and 0-12 in league action.

Game One (W 7-0)
The Oilers struck first in the bottom of the opening inning, plating two runs to set the tone early. Senior Alexys Antal sparked the rally with a double to right, and an error soon after put another runner aboard. Junior Joslynne Frazier followed with a single to left, driving in Antal, and later drew the Panther defense's attention long enough for senior Annika Bredel to swipe home and complete the scoring in the frame.

Antal, who got the start in the circle for the Orange and Black, set the tone early by retiring the side in order in the first. Both teams were held scoreless in the second before the Oilers went back to work in the third. Bredel delivered a double to left center to bring in a run, and a groundout by freshman Sophie Retton later in the inning allowed her to come home, extending Findlay's lead to 4-0.

The Oilers continued to hold Kentucky Wesleyan scoreless while tacking on three more runs in the fourth. Senior Cassie Warned delivered a two-RBI single to bring home a pair and push Findlay's lead to 6-0. The final run of the game came on a Panther error.

Neither team was able to add anything over the last three innings, as UF cruised to a 7-0 victory.

Offensively, Bredel and Warner led the way with two RBIs each. Bredel and Antal tallied Findlay's only extra-base hits, while both players also crossed the plate twice.

Antal earned the win in the circle, improving to 14-2 on the season. She worked five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out three. Senior Kora Navarro entered in relief and closed out the final two innings, surrendering only one hit and recording two strikeouts.

Game Two (W 7-0)

The first two innings were scoreless until the Oilers were able to put up two runs in the top of the third. Annika Bredel recorded a double to left center to score Antal before freshman Kaylynn Carter flied out to right field to send Bredel home and give the Oilers a 2-0 lead.

After a scoreless fourth, Findlay added two more runs in the fifth. Carter drove in a run with a double to left center, and junior Anna Jones followed with an RBI single to extend the lead. The Oilers then tacked on three insurance runs in the sixth, highlighted by a triple from senior Aurora Lescody, sealing a 7-0 victory.

Offensively, Carter paced the Oilers with a team-high two RBIs, finishing the day with a hit and a sacrifice fly. Jones went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, while Bredel finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Kaylynn Carter earned the win in the circle, improving to 6-1 on the season. She worked five shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out four. Senior Kayla Dykin entered in relief and handled the final two frames, giving up one hit and matching Carter with four strikeouts.

Findlay returns to action on Wednesday, April 15, when they host Ohio Dominican for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 and 5 p.m.
